Foreign bodies, especially cotton swabs of the external auditory canal are frequent condition encountered by otolaryngologists. Unexpected cotton swabs may cause otogenic infection, which can be severe as skull base osteomyelitis, a life-threatening disease in healthy subjects. We describe 4 different cases from simple auditory canal foreign body to otogenic skull base osteomyelitis and temporal meningitis. During the hospital course, unexpected cotton swabs were found in the external auditory canal in all cases. This report suggests that when severe otogenic infection is diagnosed in patients without any underlying disease, presence of foreign body must be suspected, leading to thorough review of history and physical examination.

Hypoglossal schwannomas are very rare. These tumors usually originate intracranially, sometimes extend extracranially. Isolated extracranial tumors extremely rare. Surgical approach of hypoglossal schwannomas are variable and surgeon should choose appropriate method considering location of main tumor. The authors experienced and treated a 55 year-old male patient with an isolated extracranial hypoglossal schwannoma extending into the parapharyngeal space. The tumor was removed successfully through modified transcervical approach. We report this case with relevant review of literature.

Backgrounds and Objectives : The purpose of this study was to describe the follow up status and rehabilitation of Unilateral hearing loss(UHL) in children and adolescents of Korean secondary referral hospital. Subjects and Method : This was a retrospective study based on clinical data collected from time of diagnosis of UHL. The study included data since November 2009. Serial audiograms were extracted from the clinical charts and follow up status and rehabilitation decisions were analyzed. Results : Of 101 children and adolescents, they were identified at a mean age of 8.9±4.9 years. Up to 45%(n=46) of subjects went through regular checking up. About a quarter of subjects(n=25) started one side hearing aids and 60%(n=15) used it successfully. A re-checked 85 of 11.8%(n=10) showed deterioration in hearing, including four subjects who developed bilateral loss. Conclusion : The regular follow up rate and rehabilitation ratio seems lower compared to advanced country. Regular monitoring of hearing and communication between professionals and guardians is crucial in order to minimize the potential negative effects of UHL.
