        This is a study to look at the transition of spatial structure with urban growth. The procedure of urban growth has been clarified by tracing the historical urban planning of Kwang Joo from 1930 to 1998. The purpose of this study is to predict the direction of spatial change and urban expansion by examining the urban form, pattern of function of Kwang Joo with articles on the planning. The size of population, the changing pattern of land use planning and zonning are compared and analyzed to justify the relation with the urban comprehensive planning and circulation planning.

      • 榮山江 新都市 開發 基本構想에 關한 硏究

        The history of a new town is as old as the civilization of mankind but we can say that the history of a new town in a modern sense began in 1902 when the new town, "Letchworth" was established in the U.K. based on the concept of a Garden City by E. Howard. The U.K. which led the development of new cities, succeeded Howard's conception and finally declared the New Town Act in 1945. This act aim at relieving overpopulation of the existing large cities, establishing economically self-sufficing permanent residence units, and developing socially harmonizing communities. The new town development policy which commenced in the U.K. is a macro urban policy to solve overpopulation of large cities and in particular, since 1960s, it was spread to many countries of the world including the U.S., Russia and Japan as well as many European countries. Due to the development of early industrial societies and subsequent rapid urbanization population and industries concentrated on cities and new towns were established to solve problems including the lack of housing, overcrowdedness of downtown area and deterioration but the purpose and type of new town development changed by the time, according as the phases of problems which large cities face changed. That is, in the early period of new town establishment, residence towns were established to solve the lack of housing in large cities, but recently in order to take in industrial reorganization of large city area, new towns with international convention centers and high-tech information industrial complex are established one after another. This paper is to grasp various problems derived from new town development in Korea and examine a basic conception of Yongsan River New Town construction to establish a foundation for Kwangju City to step forward the 21st century as an international city.

        The spatial structure of urban which is called the concept of urban and spatial include the factor of population, land, utilities, etc. and the activity of human happened in these factors.       • 信號體系 連動化에 관한 硏究 : 光州市 東門路를 中心으로 On the Center of Dong Moon Ro in Kwangju City

        The greatest factor of traffic delay on the urban road is that of intersection. A variety of studies goes on the minimize the congestion at such a intersection, and it is noted that the signal progression is the best effective idea among those studies. Accordingly, this study selected a region for case study from Sedbang three-way junction, partial section of Dongmoon Ro in Kwang-Ju City, to the intersection of Mudeung Library Entrance where is believed that the signal progression is very effective on the basis of short interval of intersection and massive traffic volume. The signal progression was simulated by TRANSYT-7F model. The summary of the result is as follows : 1. According to the change of cycle length, P.I., delay and fuel consumption show the tendency of being increased in case that cycle length becomes long or short, centering around the best cycle length. 2. In the event of progressing the cycle length, the average speed per vehicle is increased by 11.39Km per hour and P.I. value is improved by 40.65%. 3. As a result of being improved by 42.86% in the total travel time. 4. The fuel consumption in line with the progression practice produced fuel saving of 31.04%.
