        As women’s opportunities for economic activities expand and the number of nuclear families increases, the burden of caring for children also grows. Consequently, there is a rising demand for indoor play spaces where children are able to develop in a safe and healthy environment, while their parents are at work. In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government initiated the operation and support of the ‘City-Run Kids Cafe’ in 2022 to ensure that children’s fundamental ‘right to play’ is protected. However, there are no standards for the kids cafe created by Seoul City, and so this study aims to present insightful data and direction for improving public indoor play spaces. The method of this study is as follows: First, our study examined the differences between private and public types of play spaces using academic literature on indoor play spaces. Second, the characteristics of child-friendly indoor play spaces were derived through theoretical analysis of children’s play environments. Finally, a conclusion was drawn by presenting the space-specific characteristics of the ‘City-Run Kids Cafe’ through field research. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that among the five characteristics, ‘Amenity’, ‘Safety’, and ‘Playfulness’ were the most evident. However, ‘Diversity’ with play considering the age of children and ‘Physicality’, necessary for free movement, were found to be lacking, suggesting that improvements are needed.
