서울 중심부에 북악산, 인왕산, 남산, 낙산의 산줄기와 물길이 어우러진 북촌이 있다. 600여 년 간 서울의 주요 중심 지역으로 정치적·문화적 권력의 핵심 공간이라고 할 수 있는 북촌을 지리학적으로 고찰하는 것은 큰 의의가 있다. 본 연구는 우선, 시간에 따른 북촌의 물길 변화 과정을 고지도와 근·현대 지도 분석 및 중첩을 통해 살펴본다. 각종 문헌과 신문자료, 자서전 및 토박이들의 서사적 이야기(narrative text)와 물길의 실제 답사과정을 통해 합치성 여부를 파악함으로써 북촌의 장소성을 찾고자 한다. 연구결과, 북촌의 물길은 일제강점기 이후 복개공사로 인해 실제 보이지 않지만 도로 밑에서 여전히 흐르고 있었다. 그리고 우물들과 빨래터가 남아 있어서 과거 물길을 증명하는 주요 근거가 되었다. 또한 북촌의 물길은 다른 모습으로 변화했지만 여전히 이 지역의 장소성을 의미하는 중요한 요소로 자리하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. Bukchon village, the center of Seoul in South Korea, nestles snugly at a range of Bugack, Inwang and Naksan Mountains harmonizing with hills and small streams. The village has been a political, cultural and historical center of Seoul for about 600 years. Thus, the research on this place from a geological point of view is very meaningful. In this study, by overlapping and tracing antique maps and modern-contemporary maps, I found out how the water ways of Bukchon village have changed over time. I also confirmed the consistency among those changes and analyzed the placeness of Bukchon village by exploring various literatures newspapers, autobiographies and native people`s narrative texts. After the research, I found out that the water ways in Bukchon village are hidden due to the covering constructions during the Japanese colonial period, but have been still flowing under roads up to now. I also ascertained that there remain some wells and wash places in the village which are the traces of the past water ways. I verified that though the water ways of Bukchon have changed a lot, they still are recognized as one of the important factors which are influencing upon the placeness of Bukchon village.
