Livestock manure has been regarded as an important resource containing nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Over 90% of livestock manure heads to arable land in the form of compost. Particularly, Hanwoo raises on bedding floor which gives comfort and sanitation. However, a main bedding material in Korea is sawdust and have been selected with some conditions of prices, less dust, carbon supply, and so on. This study was carried out to prove alternative bedding materials; e.g., Miscanthus availability. Firstly, the evaluation of comfort was analyzed via checking the resting time of Hanwoo. Secondly, when bedding materials are mixed with manure, biodegradability of Micanthus under composting environment was compared with sawdust. As result of the experiments, Miscanthus gave Hanwoo equal comfort with sawdust and the lowest moisture content in the barn was reported in pelletized Miscanthus. Biodegradability of Miscanthus showed over two fold higher than that of sawdust. Thus, Miscanthus showed enough performance to replace sawdust and could be expected as an economic bedding material over sawdust.

Gigantic Miscanthus had been developed as an energy crop for national renewable energy policy. However, market variation made Miscanthus not only use in energy production but also the other use other than energy production. The priority of bedding material selection for animal industry lies on supply of comfort to animal related to its productivity and further dust productivity may be one of concerning factors to prevent respiratory issue on animals and workers. This research was carried out to compare dust production between Miscanthus manipulated and sawdust in commercial use. The lab-scale simulator was designed and prepared to analyze dust production in practice. In order to produce lower dust poduction, Miscanthus length of less than 40 mm may be required, which results in safety on animals and workers. For animal industry, animal behaviour and composting performance using Miscanthus shall be further investigaed in the future.

This study conducted a status survey on livestock carcasses' occurrence and disposal by livestock species in Korea for livestock farms, slaughterhouses, and private disposal facilities. The annual amount of livestock carcass in Korea is 158,000 tons, and the mortality rate by livestock species is 2.4% for beef cattle, 4.8% for dairy cattle, 19.9% for swine, 6.7% for broilers, 4.9% for layers, and 3.8% for ducks. Most of the livestock carcasses generated are buried or composted on the farm. As the number of dead livestock is expected to increase steadily, a management system for the occurrence of livestock carcasses and storage-disposal-recycle is urgent to establish.

This study present a comparison of prevailing practices of livestock farm carcasses disposal procedures in Korea with the management guideline and regulations of other countries. It has found that there is a significant difference among the guidelines for livestock mortality management based on the livestock feeding and waste disposal. Based on the finding it may require a concrete guidelines and regulation for disposing livestock carcasses considering nutrient balance both in soil and water environment. Conclusively, a centralized treatment plant equipped with highly sophisticated system (specialized knowledge and technology) is required for the final carcass disposal.

The poor management and non-existence of safety devices during the collection of manure from the storage tank causing the environmental problems and need to be properly addressed. The objective of this research is to develop an appropriate time for collection of manure using monitoring of different attributes of storage tank such water level, properties of manure, and odor concentration in the manure storage tank of swine farms. The monitoring of storage tank was conducted by water level sensor and setting the concentration of odor as secondary factor. The results showed that collection time of manure can be set according to the environmental factors of the manure storage tank. It is concluded that the amount of manure storage of swine farms and the selection of an appropriate collection point may differ in different farmhouse due to the dissimilar characteristics of the farmhouse's storage tank operation. It is recommended that management practices must be evaluated periodically and updated as per requirements.

This study was conducted to development of a regional livestock manure treatment model based on nutrient balance. The treatment model converted from compostingoriented livestock manure treatment to wastewater treatment and solid refuse fuel in public treatment facilities due to the excess nutrient balance of arable land. The inputs of 15.2% nitrogen and 22.6% phosphorus decreased, and all could be accommodated through nutrients consumed by crop cultivation. Therefore, applying regional livestock manure treatment models and nutrient management plans that control chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers, which are the sources of nutrient input, is expected to activate a crop-livestock farming system that considers crop productivity and soil environment.
