In this study, refrigerant mixtures that can supplement and replace R12 anc/or R134a in automobile air conditioners are proposed and their performance is tested in a breadboard type refrigeration test facility. A thermodynamic cycle performance analysis was carried out in order to simulate the automobile air conditioners and refrigerant mixtures composed of R22, R134a, R142b, RE170, R290, and R600a were selected to supplement and replace R12 and/or R134a. And a breadboard type test facility was designed and built to verify the performance of some of the alternative refrigerant mixtures proposed. Test results showed that R134a/RE170 and R22/R134a/RE170 mixtures are good candidates to supplement and replace both R12 and R134a in the long run. On the other hand, R22/R142b and R22/R134a/R142b mixtures are good only as the short term supplementary alternatives for the existing air conditioners charged with R12.<br/>
