Political Panentheism for a Liberative Logic of Faith in the Postmodern Era
2014 Madang: Journal of Contextual Theology Vol.0 No.22
This paper suggests a type of panentheism, political panentheism, whichcan transmit the legacy of Korean minjung theology viably in thepostmodern era. Although minjung theology, which was very prosperous inthe 1970s and 1980s in the Korean theological context, has a deep wisdomin its religiosity and social practicality, it has been losing its influence onKorean Christianity for various reasons. Still, the teachings of minjungtheology are highly needed for the rescue of Christian faith from the crisis, acrisis that Christian faith cannot witness to the God of salvation especiallyfor the people who are marginalized. For this task, minjung theologydemands a reformulation of its legacy which can work in the changedsituation today. This reformulation is to reinterpret its ideas in thetheological background of panentheism. This paper is composed of three parts. First, it articulates the changedsituation in which minjung theology is challenged for maintaining itsfundamental concern, mission and ecumenism from the margin. Second, itexplains ‘political panentheism,’which is a viable form of minjungtheology in the changed milieu of postmodernism, and suggests it as atheological and educational ‘project’for the Christian religion to retrievethe liberative logic of faith. Third, it deals with ways of application ofpolitical panentheism to meet various needs of the contemporary church.
Vol.0 No.19
This paper attempts a critical analysis of the Christian church as a historical movement from the perspective of process thought. Whitehead’s philosophy of organism refreshes our sensibility on the mutuality of all realities in the world and provides a significant perspective for recognizing any historical movement, including Christian churches, thoroughly in relation to its surroundings. In his late works between 1925 (Science and the Modern World) through 1933 (Adventures of Ideas), Whitehead shows a penetrating insight on the history of Christian church. His ideas are transmitted to an eminent process theologian, John B. Cobb, Jr., who locates the church in the world-historical context and deeply reveals its nature and mission. For Cobb, the philosophy of organism becomes a main tool to reinterpret positive aspects of the traditional Christian ecclesiology and to overcome its negative sides. His final ecclesiological suggestion, the church as the transformative community for Peace, provides us with a philosophical, historical, and theological criterion to understand the life of Christian churches.
An Intellectual Biography of Ahn Byung-mu: A Search for Jesus in History
2022 Madang: Journal of Contextual Theology Vol.- No.38
This article, presented as a lecture at ‘the Commemorating Conference for the 100th Anniversary of An Byung-mu’s Birth’ in October 2022, attempts to depict his life and thoughts by reading his writings chronologically. It sets the central theme of his entire life as ‘the search for Jesus in history’ and explains how the theme developed in his thoughts by dividing it into four stages. First, the stage of ‘existence’ centered on the period when the journal of Ya-sung was published in 1951-56. Second, the theological transition taking place during the publication of the journal of Hyun-jon in 1969-80 from the existentialist understanding to minjung theology, Third, the process of establishing full-fledged minjung theology as the ‘theology of event’ with the publication of the journal of Theological Thoughts since 1973. Fourth, a theology of life in the time of the journal of Salim since 1988. Through this process, we can find how he creatively confronted his time and what he suggests to us today.
