An intermediate heat exchanger(IHX) is the key component in which the heat from the primary circuit helium is transferred to the secondary circuit helium(about 950℃ at 1000psi) in a very high temperature reactor(VHTR). Joining of IHX candidate materials such as Haynes 230, Hastelloy-X and Inconel 617 by a vacuum brazing have been investigated at 1100, 1150, and 1190℃ for holding time 5 minutes using a nickel-based insert metal MBF 15. The effects of homogenizing times and brazing temperatures on the joint and the resulting joint tensile strength were investigated. Excellent joints were obtained that joint tensile strength when processed at 1190℃ for 5 minutes. The elemental distribution in the joint was analysed on the joint cross-section by EPMA. Major elements detected included Ni, Fe, Cr, Si and B. Results from EPMA reveal the agglomerates along the centerline of the joint were in Cr, Ni and Si. These results suggest possible formation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni and Cr silicides and possibly borides.
