To comply with noise regulation, vehicle mufflers are designed to be adequate at all operating frequency bands. Therefore loss of performance due to increased backpressure had to be accepted. However, if a muffler is designed for a specific frequency band, the structure of a muffler can be simplified and backpressure can be decreased as a result.<br/> In this study, acoustical transmission loss of various silencers was theoretically evaluated. For the resonance type silencer, which has the most adequate structure for noise control of vehicles, basic structure for noise control and the theoretical transmission loss during the structure control were determined.<br/>
