Sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) copolymers (PESs) were synthesized using hydroquinone 2-potassium sulfonate (HPS) with other monomers (bisphenol A and 4-fluorophenyl sulfone). PESs with different mole% of hydrophilic group were prepared by changing the mole ratio of HPS in the polymerization reaction. The chemical structure and the thermal stability of these polymers were characterized by using ¹H-NMR, FT-IR and TGA techniques. The PES 60 membrane, which has 60 mole% of HPS unit in the polymer backbone, has a proton conductivity of 0.091 S/cm and good insolubility in boiling water. The TGA showed that PES 60 was stable up to 272?C with a char yield of about 29%;at;900?C;under;N₂ atmosphere. To investigate the single cell performance, the catalyst coated PES 60 membrane was used and a single cell test was carried out using H₂/O₂ gases as fuel and oxidant at various temperatures. We observed that the cell performance was enhanced by increasing the cell temperature. A current density of 1400 mA/cm² at 0.60 V was obtained at 70?C.

In this study, it is attempted to find out the optimal shape of U-type bellows using the finite element method. The effective factors, mountain height, length, thickness, and number of convolutions are considered and the proper values are chosen for the simulation. The results shows that if the number of convolutions are reduced, the volume decreases while the stress increases. However, the number of convolutions are increased, the volume increases above the standard volume and the stress obviously increases. In addition, the effect of the thickness of bellows on the stress is very large. Both of the volume and stress are decreasing at a certain lower value region.

Vickers hardness is one of the most widely useful methods to obtain mechanical properties of a product. The hardness number of a cold-forged product is in close relation with its effective strain. However, few attempts to obtain the relation not by empirical results but by only simulation have been made for the Vickers hardness test. This paper presents the method to predict the relation between effective strains and the hardness by using FE-simulation of the hardness test without time-killing experiments. The results of FE-simulation for the materials are compared with those of experiments and also compared with those of experiments of the previous study to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

Air flow in the engine room has become an important factor in the performance improvement of engine cooling. Recently, engine room is becoming denser than ever, because of the advent of high power engine and larger passenger compartment area. Computer simulation is not only an economical tool in view of time and cost saving but also an efficient method for the optimal design. In this paper, cooling performances of two type radiators in the engine room have been simulated by using the commercialized CFD code, STAR-CD.<br/>
