In order to maximize the methane production from several animal feces, various parmeters have been studied for their optimum values. The fecal material tested includes manures of pig, chicken, and cows. When we inoculate the fresh tank with old tank sediment which was supposed to contain large number of methane bacteria, we could not increase the total volume of methane produced but could intensify the methane production. within faster and shorter period of time and the pH stubilaiztion could be achieved more easily with in shorter length of time. Predigestion of fecal material did not seem to increase the methane production efficiency as far as concerned with those animal feces tested. Total average methane production(scrubbed once through 1N NaOH solution) per one gram of fecal organic matter is 235.3㎖ for cow feces, 418.0㎖ for pig feces, and 590.6㎖ for chicken manure. After replaced 30% of the tank material with fresh manure (5% organic matter), the peak gas production was reached within 20-30 hours and the optimum pH appeared to lie between pH 6.5 and pH 7.5. When the tank temperature was lowered from 35℃ to 20℃, methane production rate was diminished at a ratio of 1 : 10 and accordingly pH was decreased. After several days of this temperature lowering, the methan production rate could be easily recovered if the temperature is increased back to 35℃, which means methane production could survive the intermittent temperature shock. For the winter management of methane tank especially during cold Korean winter, the cheap solar collector is being tested to warm the tank with in the vinyl house.
