Vol.6 No.2(B)

Convective heat transfer coefficients at the nozzle throat were calculated from existing unsteady state exact solution and direct experimental temperature measurements. Results were compared to the prediction from Bartz's simple correlated equation and other experimental data. The test results well agreed with other experimental data except initial combustion phase. Bartz's prediction was considerably higher than experimental value. Temperature was measured with 8 thermocouples from four different depth of nozzle throat. Combustion material was composite of ammonium perchlorate, polybutadiene and 2% of aluminium.

March without Vision: David Hare’s The Absence of War

Vol.21 No.1

The argument that The Absence of War, a story about the political journey of George Jones, never gets beyond political fantasy, conveniently simplifies the political insight lurking beneath the surface. Although the play is very closely linked to the 1992 election, it is not just about the Labour Party’s election defeat. The struggle and eventual downfall of George, a central figure in the play, is a product of the increasingly faithless British political culture as much as his personal flaws, a plaguing self-doubt or a lack of the political killer instinct. In this paper, I argue that the very ‘deficiency of active interplay of political ideas,’ which was pointed out by some major critics as ‘dramatic weakness,’ constitutes, in fact, the crux of Hare’s dramatic intention to demonstrate modern British politics. In The Absence of War, Hare’s powerful moral energy and political message come from the very sense of lack of the interplay of political ideologies, which is a creation of an increasingly homogeneous political climate and of ideological vagueness. What caught Hare’s dramatic imagination was the sense of apathy on the parts of politicians and the public, and the play provides a remarkable commentary on British social climates in the post-Thatcher period. In the play, the sense of loss and purposelessness is created shamelessly through the negative ways in which the election campaign itself is run. The excitement created by backstage campaign activities is well delivered, but is always juxtaposed with or countered by the awful destitution of any battle over ideology and the lack of political vision. The central question, ‘why has George failed?’ is left for the audience, who are invited to be the voting public in the play. George’s failure to speak his heart is, by all means, a product of the politics of impotence and artificiality to which the electors’ (the audience’s) potential compromise and silence has contributed. George’s final question is deliberately aimed at the audience, who are invited to contemplate their active role in history.

The non-shrinkage grout to use ground fly ash as admixture

2018 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.19 No.6

This study uses fly ash for non-shrinkage grout in order to develop strength of grout and improve its durability. We grind flyash to the extent of 7,000 cm2/g and use ground fly ash and raw fly ash respectively at the proportion of 10%, 20%, 30%instead of OPC and compare the results drawn on the condition of each proportion. As a mixed material of grout, EVA andwater-reducing agent is added in order to prevent bleeding and improve segregation resistance, CSA is added with a view topreventing drying shrinkage and improving early strength property. In regard to flow and flow time test for analyzing andevaluating workability, it is revealed that grouts of all mix proportions except raw fly ash 30% mix proportion satisfy allperformance criteria. With regard to length change rate, grout with no admixture shows the highest shrinkage rate, but therate is 0.0005%, extremely insignificant rate. As material age increases, compressive strength of two grouts, that is to sayground fly ash 10% and 20%-used grouts, exceed that of grout with no admixture or show high-level compressive strength

Vol.31 No.3

This paper explores Roy Williams’ complex representation of British black youth in two of his works, Lift Off (1999) and Fallout (2003). Williams, a leading contemporary British black dramatist, challenges the mainstream media’s stereotypical portrayals of black masculinity and black-on-black crime, which are largely based on the perception of urban black youth as hyper-sexualized, degenerate and criminal-minded. Unlike the first and the second generations of British black dramatists, who relied heavily upon ‘the migrant sensibilities’ or the binary opposition of white and black, Williams’ plays focus on a complex web of black identity, particularly the urban sensibilities of a third-generation of black youth in contemporary British multiculturalism. Dealing respectively with the stereotypes of black machismo and the public discourse on black-on-black violence, Life Off and Fallout swerve away from the representation based on fundamentally binary terms which have long characterized the racial relations between black and white. In both plays, the conflicts within black communities are critically examined and the notion of black solidarity is under scrutiny. Williams’ representation of black youth is closely related with the immediate and urgent social, economic issues such as racism, urban poverty, violence and gang culture. Establishing the links between black masculinity and crime impinging upon black youth culture, Williams contextualizes it in relation to the social structure. However, Williams’ black youth are not recounted as passive victims of white supremacy. They are also subject to criticism, being the active agents of criminal deeds and demonstrating the lack of any ethical awareness and moral responsibility. The representation of black youth in Life Of and Fallout challenges both the conservative discourse, which has defined black youth as a hotbed of crime and the well-meaning liberal discourse, which has attempted to posit them as mere victims of the repressive social system.

Bridging the Gap between Vision and Reality: History and Audience Engagement in Howard Brenton’s Weapons of Happiness

Vol.31 No.-

Howard Brenton’s play Weapons of Happiness seems to be caughtbetween the political situation, where positive, constructive utopian designsare no longer possible, and the critical atmosphere, where evensympathetic left-leaning critics join in the general criticism of the lack ofclear political vision in the play. In fact, to a degree, Weapons ofHappiness avoids the definition of the socialist ideal, and the achievementof vision is postponed. This huge gulf between the ideal and the real inWeapons of Happiness misleadingly has made the critics condemnBrenton’s lack of political message or has forced them to find the core ofthe play only in apocalyptic aspect. However, the nature of the conflictbetween historical vision and social reality in Weapons of Happiness shouldbe examined in the context of the establishment of more activerelationship with the audience. This essay argues that instead of the failedrevolutionaries in the play, it is the audience who must perform the hardwork of analysis and make the connections in Weapons of Happiness. In Weapons of Happiness, the series of contradictions largely revolvesaround the huge gap between historical vision and contemporary reality. The historical perspective provided by the political leaders at the ‘macro’level of history including revolutionary vision and heroism is contradictoryto the dreary reality of the workers at the ‘micro’ level of history. In two separate but interrelated storylines, one relates Josef Frank’s fragmentedrecall of his revolutionary past, and the other charts the on-the-spotevents of the workers’ endeavor to achieve the revolution. The two seriesof events collide with each other, maximizing the audience’s criticalassessment of their own role in history. In the play, the past is suggestedas a fundamental foundation on which the present is constituted, andagainst the future, the present is measured and founding wanting. Theutopian potential of final word depends upon the audience.

Vol.32 No.3

This paper explores the dilemmas of forging alternative Black British identities in Kwame Kwei-Armah’s 2003 play, Elmina’s Kitchen. Kwei-Armah, the established Black British playwright, presents the intergenerational differences in the community of Afro-Caribbean immigrants in London, encouraging the audience to examine the dilemmas involved in creating a sustainable community within the mainstream white society. Elmina’s Kitchen centres on the predicament of Deli, a reformed ex-con who tries in vain to stop Ashley, his rebellious son, from joining a local gang. The final scene finds him helplessly watching Ashley being killed in the gang warfare. Ashley’s murder is avoidable, and the play is intended as a serious warning to young black males drawn rapidly into the inner-city black-on-black crime. However, the play moves beyond its moral framework as Deli’s dilemma comes to the foreground. As a second-generation immigrant, Deli swerves away from the established stereotype of ‘irresponsible’ and ‘deviant’ black fathers, challenging the mainstream audience’s prejudice against Black Britons. He is the only character that aspires to instill a positive sense of black identity for the third-generation black youth. He has to re-define ‘blackness’ as well as to combat political and economic impotence, the negative legacy of the first-generation. Without the benefit of African cultural heritage and rejecting the ‘rube boy’ culture, the Caribbean subculture based on repressive black masculinity, he sometimes comes close to internalizing the idealized white norms and values. Deli’s failure to save Ashley is both personal and generational. It demonstrates a dilemma associated with the situation of the second-generation immigrants forging viable black identities in the poverty of the mainstream black culture.

Vol.69 No.5

The 2015 revised national curriculum offers five scientific key competencies (SKCs) and emphasizes the acquisition of SKCs through the subject. This study performed comparative analyses of the SKCs included in the inquiry-based physics activities of five kinds of middle-school science textbooks. To do this, we set up a key competency analysis framework and used the analysis framework to analyze the inquiry activities of all five middle-school science textbooks. According to results from the comparative analyse of SKCs, the ‘scientific participation and lifelong learning’ element among the five SKCs showed the lowest reflection rate in all the inquiry-based activities. Especially, it is never included in the required activities. We also discuss ways of improving teaching methods and teacher training to help students build the five SKCs evenly.
