〈여름과 연기〉의 등장인물 중 ‘존’의 인물 분석 방식 연구 - 프로이트의 ‘오이디푸스 콤플렉스’를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is variation in the ways of analyze character in the play. The classical way is still important way that finding the ``object`` of the character by reading text. Out modern or contemporary plays. it is hard to analyze its characters by using a classical way simply. The conflict of characters is more complex and also the individual character. So. the classical way expose limit to analyze characters in modern or contemporary plays. We have to get a way to analyze the hidden meanings that under the text. Only exposed information by reading the text is inadequate. The hidden meanings are supposed to prevent the naive expression to actors and directors. The subject of this study is ``John`` in < Summer & Smoke > by Tennessee Williams. He is the man who has a complex matters and character. The way of this study is the ``Oedipus Complex`` of Sigmund Freud``s psychoanalysis. John loves Alma but he feels fear about serious relationship with her. I analyze his character by using ``Oedipus Complex`` on the basis of his mother``s premature death, and the relationship with the Alma who likes mother. First of all, we have to consider about a literary transform of the psychoanalysis. It is hard to apply the psychoanalysis as it is. And we apply ``Oedipus Complex`` by researching about three most meaningful persons to John. The first is Alma who is the subject of attachment. He lose his mother who prematurely. So he loves Alma who likes his mother. But he can``t love her fleshly, because Alma is a mother to John``s unconsciousness. The second is Rosa who is the subject of self-punishment. He feels guilty about loving woman who likes his mother. So he has sexual relationship with Rosa, It seems like a kind of self-destruction. The last is his father who is the subject of competition and identification. His father does not have many amount in < Summer & Smoke >, but on the basis of information through the text, John and his father have a same job. doctor. And he hate his job and his father in youth, but later, he walk``s his father``s way. The doctor``s way, So his father can be the subject of competition and identification. It cannot change the information in the text although we analyze the hidden meanings under the text. So it feels unnecessary to analyze character. In addition, it even cannot change the quality of act. But extending a range about analyzing character is give much comfortable conviction to actors who facing complex character, Because the unconsciousness that cause character is not change. Through this study. R hope much more ways of analyze character can be developed.
