이 논문은 라투르식 현장 연구와 글쓰기의 활용 가능성을 높이는 것을 목표로, 라투르의 초기 작업으로 분류되는 과학인류학 저작들을 중점적으로 분석한다. 라투르는 과학적 실천이 이루어지는 실험실을 인류학적 현장 연구의 현지로 택해, 과학적 사실이 어떻게 실험실의 일상적인 실천들과 협상들 속에서 문헌적 기입들과 함께 만들어지는지를 세밀하게 기술한 바 있다. 이 연구에서는 이러한 과학인류학 작업들에서 라투르가 실험실의 물질들과 실천들을 탐구하기 위해 연구자로서 어떤 자세와 전략을 취했는지, 또 라투르식의 민족지적 서술에서 어떤 특성이 나타나는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 작업에 기반하여, 라투르의 논의에서 행위자는 언제나 행위자 네트워크의 효과로서 주어진다는 점에서 개별적인 존재자가 아님을 명확히 밝히고, 따라서 ‘행위자를 따르라’는 구호는 행위자들의 관계들이 만들어지는 과정을 그려 내라는 주문이라는 점을 보일 것이다. 마지막으로, 현장 연구자로서 라투르의 위치성을 짚어 보면서 라투르의 논의를 상황적 지식으로서 이해하고, 이에 기반하여 라투르의 기획을 보다 성찰적으로 이어 갈 수 있는 방향을 모색해 볼 것이다. 라투르를 좇아 물질들과 실천들을 탐구하는 구체적인 방식과 그 함의를 제시하는 이 연구를 시작으로, 다양한 현장에서 인간은 물론 비인간 사물과 물질의 역할을 보다 실질적으로 탐구하는 경험적 연구들이 촉발되기를 기대한다. This paper aims to increase the applicability of Latour’s Actor-Network Theory as a methodology for fieldwork by analyzing his early works, Anthropology of Science. Latour chose a scientic laboratory as a eld site and described how scientic facts were constructed through practical tasks, negotiations, and literary inscriptions. This paper examines the attitudes and strategies that Latour adopted as an anthropologist of science to explore the materials and practices in the laboratory, as well as the characteristics of his ethnographical writing. Based on this work, we argue that the actors in Latour’s discussions are always presented as results of actor-networking, rather than as individual entities. erefore the slogan “following the actors themselves” is simply a call to describe the process by which actors’ relationships are made. Finally, we will consider the situatedness of Latour as a eld researcher and his ndings as situated knowledge, which will show how the Latourian research program can be continued more reflexively. Starting with this research of presenting Latour’s specic ways of exploring materials and practices and their implications, we hope to stimulate empirical researches that deal with the roles of humans and non-humans in various fields more substantially.

기존의 사회학적 연구는 제대혈에 대해 냉동기술이 가져오는 “희망의 정치경제학”으로 설명을 시도하며, 잠재적 환자를 만들어내는 생명의료기술로서의 제대혈 기술 혹은 제대혈 은행의 마케팅 전략 등 제대혈 산업에 분석의 초점을 맞추었다. 본 연구는 이러한 공급자 중심적인 분석에서 벗어나 제대혈을 보관/기증 하기(혹은 하지 않기)를 선택하는 산모의 입장에서 제대혈이라는 기술 다시 보기를 시도한다. 임신을 확인하는 순간부터 산모는 주기적으로 산부인과에 방문하며 국가와 의료 제도가 실시하는 일련의 산전 진단검사의 과정에 편입된다. 이 과정은 의료 기술을 통해 태아를 모체와 독립된 개체로 구현하고 태아의 안녕을 끊임없이 확인하게 하지만 선택을 임산부에게 남겨둠으로써 임신부로 하여금 불안을 가중시키고 이를 해소하기 위한 “과학적 모성”을 실천하게 한다. 이 과정의 말단에서 제시되는 제대혈 보관은 불안함을 해소할 수 있는 장치로 기능한다. 반면 제대혈 보관 대신 기증을 선택하는 부모들은 자신들의 선택의 이유로 공공의 이익을 내세우며 아이가 사회의 구성원으로 보람된 일을 하기를 바랐다. 본 연구는 보관과 기증의 선택기제가 대립 하기보다는 모두 돌봄 실천의 자장 속에 위치한 어머니 노릇으로 읽어낼 수 있음을 주장하며 이를 “돌봄노동”으로 개념화한다. Focusing on mothers’ care practices, this paper attempts to examine the technology around umbilical cord blood rather than analysing it solely as the “political economy of hope” manufactured by modern cryotechnology and its industry. From the moment of a Korean woman’s pregnancy is confirmed, she is enrolled in the routinized prenatal program provided by the national healthcare system, and regularly checks her body and fetus. In this process, mothers encounter a series of choices and seek to increase their knowledge of biomedical technology and other women’s practice in oder to make better choices. Through this practice, mothers embody scientific motherhood and experience anxiety about their choices. Ultimately, they confront the decision whether or not to keep the cord blood. This paper argues that the cord blood is their care labor for their own bodies and their child, as mothers are involved in a cascade of momentous of choices, whether they choose to privately keep it or publicly donate it.
