As a study of the origin of Korean ancient music, this paper is an attempt to investigate its origin in ancient heaven- worshipping and shaman rituals in the context of myth and religion. Through a new interpretation on the Sino-Korean word, "sin"(신, 神, God), I tried to present the result from the search for the origin of music within the heaven-worshipping ritual as an primitive composite art by reconstructing of genuine Korean words on god. "Sori" (sound) and "norae" (song), were derived from the genuine Korean words for the sun, "sal"(살) and "nal"(날). Thus sori and norae reflected the complimentation on the sun as the origin of life and on the heaven as the god worshiped by ancient Koreans. According to the interpretation, the character of origin of the ancient Korean music can be revealed. The core of this paper is that the ancient Korean concept of music as the worshipping of the heaven as god was revealed in the musical terms. This proves that ancient Koreans are heaven-worshiping people and have used the principles of heaven(sun1 as philosophical axis in forming genuine quality of music. When we consider that the ancient Korean music was derived from the heaven- worshipping ritual since neolithic period and that sori and norae mean the life-operation of human, the philosophy of ancient people appear evermore remarkable.
