        The authors have tried to make a potato commeal Tween 80 medium containing caffeic acid(PDCC) more convenient for routine mycological laboratory study than Sabouraud dextrose agar. Five species were culture on PDCC at 25 0C and 37 oC. Gross and microscopic fmdings of their colonies were examined. The colonial morphology and microscopic appearance were compared with those of the same strains on caffeic acid agar(CAA). Cηptococcus neoformans Which is a medically important and whose colony showed brown to purple brown on PDCC medium was distinguishable not only from buff colored C. laurentii after one week incubation but also from Candida spp. Candida albicans also formed chlamydospores and pseudohyphae on PDCC. Trichophyton mentagrophytes showed yellow- brown pigmentation which were rapid and darker in the center with gradual fading to the periphery. π1e macroconidia grape-like clusters of microconidia and spiral hyphae were better on PDCC. π1e gross morphology of Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum were similar on PDCC, CAA but macroconidia were seen more typically on PDCC.

        정상인 외이도의 Malassezia furfur의 분포에 관한연구

        MaZαssezia furfur is resident microflora of the extemal ear canal previous studies showed that this hyphae and spore from could found on clinically normal external e따 canal. Normal person, 76 subjects were studied. Ear wax specimens were stained with parker ink‘ solution. The number of hyphae and spore were graded according to index(+1 to 3+). The incidence of malassezia infection of the external ear canal is 48.7% in spore and 30.3% in hyphae. The incidence rate of spore and hyphae in the group aged above 50, were lower than that of other age groups.

        The clinical and mycological effect on tinea capitis due to Microsporum canis was studied. All ten patients were childrens, and they were treated with oral itraconazole. Mycologically, hairs were examined by the direct KOH method and culture. Periods of treatment were 6 weeks. The positive fmding in the mycological examination were 4 weeks by the direct examination of hairs. we can thus conclude hair on the lesions were important in evaluating the clinical effect, and PDCA was most useful in the detennining the mycological effect on tinea capitis.

        Microsporum gypseum is a geophilic fungus abundant in soil throughout the world. M. gypseum has been identified for the first time in Korea at 1976. The purpose of this study was to investigate epidemiologic aspects of M. gypseum. We performed the epidemiologic study an 198 patients with M. gypseum infections in from January 1976 to December 2005. From 100,012 patients, dermatophytes were isolated as follows; Trichophyton rubrum was isolated from 86,553 (86.5%), T. interdigitale 3,991 (4.0%), Epidermophyton floccosum 1.021 (0.1%), T. tonsurans 141 (0.1%), T. mentagrophytes 3.930 (3.9%), T. verrucosum 220 (0.2%), Microsporum canis 3.879 (3.9%), and M. gypseum 198 (0.2%). Number of patients with M. gypseum by site and age were as follows; most patients infected with tinea corporis were young people under 10 years. M. gypseum were most frequently isolated in summer and autumn.

        An epidemiological study was performed on zoophilic dermatophytes. The number of patients with zoophilic dermatophytes diagnosed on clinical findings and culture at the Catholic Dermatological Clinic in Daegu City were 1,339 for 10 years from January 1995 to December 2004. Species of zoophilic dermatophytes isolated from 47,925 patients with dermatophytes were as follows; Trichophyton(T.) rubrum was isolated from 43,702 (91.2%), T. interdigitale 2,660 (5.6%), Epidermophyton(E.) floccosum 43 (0.1%), T. tonsurans 131 (0.3%), T. mentagrophytes 625 (1.3%), T. verrucosum 56 (0.2%), Microsporum(M.) canis 658 (1.4%), and M. gypseum 50 (0.1%). Zoophilic dermatophytes infections were chiefly Tinea facial in the cases of T. mentagrphytes and Tinea corporis in the cases of T. verrucosum, but Tinea capitis in the cases of M. canis. Number of patients with zoophilic dermatophytes by site and age were as follows; Most patients with infected scalps were young people under 15 years old. Infection of the trunk area (neck,chest,back) and extremities (arms, legs, hands, feet) were relatively high in those patients over 15 years old. M. canis were most frequently isolated in autumn and winter, and T. mentagrophyts and T. verrucosum were mostly in spring and winter.

      • Trichophyton tonsurans의 진균학적 성상

        Trichophyton(T.) tonsurans has been identified for the first time in Korea in 1995 and has been increasing in number of reported in wrestlers, in judo players, and in korean - style wrestlers. Author tried mycological studies with T. tonsurans is isolated in Daegu Korea. The results are as follows: All 16 strains of T. tonsurans tested for nutritional requirement, showed strongly stimulated growth by thiamine, mild to moderate growth on casamino acid agar, poor growth on ammonium nitrates base agar. All 16 strains of T. tonsurans tested showed positive results for hair perforation and urease test. Gross findings of T. tonsurans showed that fine granular surface with light yellow hue or white color and mahogany brown color on the reverse side. Microscopic findings showed that septated hyphae, chlamydoconidia and microcondia. Microconidia were characteristic in their arrangerment and shape : round or oval shaped microconidia laterally to hyphae, some were match - head like terminal swelling.

        The number of children patients with tinea pedis and onychomycosis diagnosed on clinical findings and culture at the Catholic Dermatological Clinic in Daegu City were 144,446 for 2 years from January 2005 to December 2006. 120 children were suspected of having clinical onychomycosis or tinea pedis. KOH smears and cultures on the Potato corn meal dextrose agars (PDCA) were done for the suspected toe webs, nails and uninvolved neighbor toe webs. Socks were dusted and cultured to check contamination of clothes. Family infections were checked by questionnaire. The incidence was 92 (0.06%) out of 144,446 outpatients in tinea pedis, 28 (0.02%) in onychomycosis. Trichophyton(T.) rubrums were isolated from all of the 7 cases of onychomycosis. T. mentagrophytes was isolated from 5 cases of the tinea pedis patients and T. rubrum was isolated from 50 (92.5%) cases of the tinea pedis. The right side was predominant for onychomycosis of both toe nails (23 of 25) and finger nails (3 of 3). No fungal elements were detected from normal looking neighbor toe webs by KOH examinations. However, culture on PDCA agars showed T. rubrum isolates from 3 toe webs. 7 showed positive cultures from the socks. From the questionnaire, 94 had family infections.

        The clinical features of 178 patients with tinea corporis from January to December 2008 in Catholic Skin Clinics were evaluated. KOH examination and culture from the patients lesions were performed. And cultured dermatophytes were identified by colony morphology and microscopic findings. The ratio of male to female with the infection was about 1.3:1 and showed more prevalence in male. The unexposed area (84.5%) was more frequently affected than exposed (15.5%) and the most common site was buttock. Coexisting dermatophytoses in patients with tinea corporis were noted in 27 cases and the most commons were tinea pedis. The isolated dermatophytes were composed of Trichophyton rubrum (91.7%), Microsporum canis (2.6%), T. verrucosum (2.6%), T. mentagrophytes (1.7%), and T. tonsurans (1.7%).

        Trichophyton uerrucosum의 진균학적 성상

        Trichophyton(T.) uerrucosum is a worldwide zoophilic dermatophyte. A human infection was first reported in the south western Part of Korea inI1986. Gross observation on sabouraud dextrose agar and Trichophyton agar and hair perforation test were performed at 37℃. It``s was classified T. album, T. ochraceum, T. discoides were investigated for their mycological features. colonies morphology is T. album and T. ochraceum showed flat, glabrous, T. discoides showed flat and t:olrentose on their surface. The results are as follows: Three types showed growth on the basal medium plus inositol and thinmine (Trichophyton agar No.3). showed poor growed on No.4. All strains showed negative reaction on hair perforation tests and showed good growth at 37℃. showed white color. KOH solution add on to their colonies on Sabourd dextrose agar and results that all strains no absorption but T. albwn was 9 strains of absorption.

        The increased incidence of candial infections have been associated with the increase in the number of patients at risk. Yeast islolates from the tongues of elderly diabetic patients were compared to those of non diabetics. Yeasts were isolated from the tongues of 90 diabetics and 32 non diabetics using the tongue swab and smear technique. The yeasts were identified by germ tube and API 20C systems. The frequency of yeast isolates was much higher in diabetics compared to that of non diabetics. 78.9% of diabetic patients compared to 31.3% in non diabetics. Of the 71 yeast isolates from the diabetic patients identified by the API 20C system, 58 were Candida albicans., 6 were Candida tropicalis, 2 were Rhodotorula rubra, 2 were Trichosporon beigelii, 1 was Candida parapsilosis, 1 was Candida kefyr, and 1 was Candida guilliermondii. Of the 10 yeast isolates from non diabetic patients identified by the API 20C system, 8 were Candida albicans, 1 was Candida parapsilosis, and 1 was Rhodotorula rubra.
