Inventories of soluble elements in the gap and grain boundaries of domestic used PWR fuel pellets were measured to estimate the quantities of radionuclides that are liable to be rapidly released into the groundwater of a disposal site. The gap inventory of cesium for the pellets in the used fuel with a burn-up range of 45 to 66 GWD/MTU showed 0.85 to 1.7% of its total inventory, which was close to 1/6 to 1/3 of the fission gas release fraction (FGRF). However, the amounts of cesium released from the gaps of the pellets below 40 GWD/MTU of a burn-up and less than 1% FGRF were so erratic that the gap inventory could not be defined by ie FGRF. Strontium inventories in the gap and grain boundaries of the pellets in the same rod were not significantly varied, and the iodine inventory in the gap of the used PWR fuels was estimated to be less than or the same as the FGRF.

In SI engine research the pressuredata in cylinder is the most important fundamental ones leading to engine efficiencies and performances. It is, therefore, necessary to obtain accurate pressure data and yet it is often impossible to install a reliable data producing, flush-mounted type pressure transducer in a cylinder of small and medium size multicylinder SI engines. When flush mounting the transducer is not possible, the spark-plug type pressure transducer is commonly used as an alternative. In this case, the transmission tube of spark-plug type pressure transducer introduces distortions in the pressure signal.<br/> Efforts were made to understand the dynamic characteristics of spark-plug pressure transducer by shock tube tests and real engine experiments. In engine experiment the cylinder pressure data were simultaneously obtained by both flush mounted and spark-plug type pressure transducers of certain transmission tube geometry.<br/> Those pressure data collected by spark-plug type pressure transducer were tested for correction to flush mounted ones by the application of transfer function. As a result of the calibration the IMEP difference between F/M data and improved S/P data was shown to be corrected about 75-98% from the original ones.

Engine performance is one of the main objectives specified at the beginning of a new engine design project. The cycle simulation for SI engine is based on the zero-dimensional gas exchange model and a heat release expression by Viebe. This program also requires minimum input data and takes only a short time to run. Heat transfer from cylinder transfer formula. The flow coefficient (effective area) is calculated from valve lift using the standard flow coefficient curve and engine friction is calculated from the Millington and Hartles' engine friction formula. The chemical species considered in burned gas are 6 species -CO, CO, H₂, H₂ 0, O₂, N₂ and the cylinder pressure, homogeneous cylinder temperature, gas composition and burned fraction are calculated at each crank angle through the cycle. To check the validity and accuracy, experimental study was done with 3 engines for measuring cylinder pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, brake mean effective pressure and air flow rate, etc.<br/> Despite its simple assumptions, cycle simulation showes excellent breathing and performance correlation when compared with data of tested engines, and have been proved useful in engine design.

One of the most probable reason of the apex seal damage in IR-2500 industrial Wankel (rotary) engine was believed to be the engine detonation. Both analytical and experimental studies were made with a view to find out engine detonation pressure.<br/> The stagnation detonation pressure Po was estimated based on the data from IR2500 engine detonation tests, such as engine firing pressure, state of fresh charge at BDC and polytropic compression exponent. The estimated stagnation detonation pressure for the natural gas fueled IR-2500 engine was in eXcess of 3,700 psia.<br/> With. natural gas liquid added to the natural gas the octane value of the fuel was lowered, thus, making the engine mare prone to detonate. The estimated detonation pressure for the case with the mixed fuel was about 3,400 psia which was sufficiently high to break the apex seal.<br/> The subsequent engine lab tests performed on two identical engines with sole difference in the apex seal thickness between the two engines proved that the engine knock, in fact, was the villain of the apex seal failure.
