        Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) patients of Korean ancestry with chromosome 17p11.2-p12 deletion

        Hereditary neuropathy with liability to presure palsies (HNP) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by recurent pressure pal-sies. Most HNP patients have a 1.5 mb deletion in chromosome 17p11.2-p12. The present study aimed at evaluating the deletion of the 17p11.2-p12 region in Korean subjects with families exhibiting HNP phenotype, and to determine the clinical, elec-trophysiological and morphological aspects speci-ficaly associated with this deletion in HNP pa-tients. By genotyping six microsatellite markers (D17S921, D17S955, D17S1358, D17S839, D17S12 and D17S261), HNP with the deletion was ob-served in 79% (19 of 24) of HNP families. Nerve conduction studies were performed in 35 HNP pa-tients from these 19 families. The observed HNP deletion frequency in Koreans is consistent with findings in other populations. Disease onset occur-recurent pressure palsies than in those with a single attack (P< 0.01). Nerve conduction studies demonstrated difuse mild to moderate slowing of nerve conduction velocities that were worse over the comon entrapment sites, regardless of the clinical manifestations. A long duration of com-pound muscle action potentials without a conduc-tion block or a temporal dispersion is a character-istic of this disease. A sural nerve biopsy with teas-ing was performed in four patients, and tomacula of the myelin sheath was found in 56.4%. Our findings appear to support the existence of a phe-notype/genotype corelation in HNP patients of Korean ancestry with the deletion, and sugest that HNP patients with earlier symptom onset face an increased chance of having recurent at-tacks.

        한국 여자농구 유니폼의 여성학적 고찰

        Modern society pursuits gender equity. Gender equity means to sublate sexual superiority and priority or discrimination, and any gender should have equal opportunity. Women's Korea Basketball League(WKBL) ignored such a modern social trend to decide the new basketball uniform like swimsuit made by span-texture. The new uniform caused serious sex-discrimination issue in sports and an important feminist criticism. Even thought, the WKBL hoped to recover the women's basketball golden age or bring more spectators to basketball court, it is not right choice to make the situation giving basketball pans sexual fantasy using span-texture basketball uniform. After all, the new uniform already made a sensitive social justice issue, it is surely not the WKBL has wanted. The purpose of this study was to review history of women's basketball uniform from earlier period, and understand the historical meaning of women's basketball uniforms. The paper also examines the purposes of new uniform in terms of feminist point of view.

        공항포장용 순환골재의 처리방법별 경제성 분석

        PURPOSES: This study aimed to analyze economic effect of recycled aggregate production on job-site airport pavement. METHODS: The validation of site recycling for waste concrete as economic efficiency is analyzed through the case study of site recycling atan O airport pavement construction. The break-even point for the cost of site recycling was estimated according to two different waste concreteprocessing methods such as job-site recycling and processing on commission (or plant). RESULTS: Job-site recycling cost decreases as the use rate of job-site recycled concrete aggregate increases, or the amount of concrete wasteincreases, but transporting distance decreases. It was shown in an O airport case that as the use rate of job-site recycled concrete aggregateexceeds 61.4 %, the job-site recycling cost is cheaper than the processing cost on commission. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can utilize basic data of feasibility for site recycling of waste concrete on airport pavementconstruction.

        The Epidemiology of Myasthenia Gravis in Korea

        Purpose: An epidemiological study of myasthenia gravis (MG) has not been performed in Korea. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence and incidence of MG in Korea. Materials and Methods: Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) data from 2010 to 2014 were searched for MG codes as defined by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision. After identifying MG cases, we estimated the prevalence and annual incidence of MG based on the HIRA database and Korean population data. Results: During the study period, 10138 MG cases were identified. The prevalence of MG was 10.42 cases per 100000 people in 2010 and this increased every year to 12.99 cases per 100000 people in 2014. The average incidence of MG between 2011 and 2014 was 0.69 cases per 100000 person-years. The prevalence and incidence were higher in the older (≥50 years) age group than in the younger (<50 years) age group [prevalence: 9.26 vs. 19.24 per 100000, relative risk 2.077, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.976–2.183, p<0.001; incidence: 0.47 vs. 1.18 per 100000, relative risk 2.490, 95% CI 2.006–3.091, p<0.001]. Conclusion: This study was the first nationwide population-based epidemiological study of MG in Korea. The prevalence and incidenceof MG were consistent with those of previous studies. We found an increase in the prevalence of MG and a predominanceof elderly MG patients.

        레지오넬라 폐렴의 진단용 바이오마커의 발굴: A/J 마우스 감염 모델에서 Legionella pneumophila의 독력 유전자들의 발현양상 분석

        Background: Legionella pneumophila is the causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia. After L. pneumophila is inhaled through contaminated aerosols, it is phagocytized by alveolar macrophages, multiplies in a specialized phagosome approximately 10 h postinfection, and eventually leads to the death of host cells. Currently available diagnostic tests for Legionella pneumonia have some limitations. This study was conducted to find diagnostic biomarkers for Legionella pneumonia using virulence gene expression profiling in a murine experimental model. Materials and Methods: A/J mice were intranasally inoculated with L. pneumophila serogroup 1, and lungs were harvested 4, 8, 24, and 48 h postinfection. The strain grown in buffered yeast extract broth was used as reference samples. Cy-dye labeled cDNA samples were prepared with total RNA from lungs or broth culture, and hybridized on the oligo-microarray slide containing 2,895 genes of L. pneumophila serogroup 1. Virulence gene expression patterns were analyzed using a MIDAS software from TIGR (www. tigr.org). Results: Among a total of 332 virulence genes examined, 17 genes including sidA, lepB, the genes related to flagella assembly (fliR and fliP), LPS lipid A biosynthesis, and the enhanced entry protein EnhA were up-regulated at all four time points. We further confirmed by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR that the expression of fliP gene was highly expressed in lung tissue as well as in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids from the mouse infected with L. pneumophila serogroup 1. Conclusions: Through gene expression analysis of L. pneumophila in a mouse model, several candidate biomarkers for diagnosing Legionnaires’ disease could be identified.
