The static pile load test is carried out to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a test pile, in which is general processes consist of applying increments of static load to the test pile and observing the time-load-settlement curve recorded at each stage of loading and reloading. Although the pile load test provides various informations to predict the ultimate load of the pile, it has the considerable difficulty of requring a large amount of weight to enable the test pile to be loaded satisfactorily until the ultimate load is obtained. And also the conventional methods to determine the ultimate load, such as Bulter & Hoy’s method, etc., cannot give the accurate ultimate load, especially when the test pile was not satistactorily loaded up to the ultimate load. Therefore in the present study the conventional methods are investigated and compared with the Chin’s method, which furnishes more accurate results. The results obtained from this study are as follows : 1. For the load-settlement curve which has a small bearing capacity and an inflection point there is no problem for using the conventional methods to determine the ultimate load of pile. 2. The ultimate load by Van der Veen’s method is large than that of Terzaghi at the settlement of 25.4 mm, while for the allowable bearing capacity the former is smaller than the latter. 3. For the load-settlement curve showing the trend of progressive failure above the settlement of 25.4 mm, Chin’s method based on the mathematical theory is suitable for determining the ultimate load. 4. When the settlement of pile is less than 25.4 mm and the load settlement curve shows progressive failure, so that Terzaghi’s theory for the ultimate load of pile cannot be employed, it is recommended that Chin’s method be used in determining the ultimated load.
