Transitional Corporate Governance in Japan

This paper investigates the transition of Japanese corporate governance in the context of the change of funding and ownership structure which has taken place since the 1980s. Unlike previous studies of corporate governance which focused on interactions among agents (i.e., relationship or arm's length), this study concentrates on external control in governance style. The paper argues that Japan's hybrid funding during the 1980s and 1990s created a new corporate governance which differed from the traditional Japanese version. This corporate governance insulated companies from external controls. Companies were not controlled by external financial institutions, as before, nor by external market mechanisms. This eventually created a structure of nurturing self-interested opportunism. Japanese governance was transformed from the traditional into a pattern of extraordinary weak governance.

Passage to Asian regional community is tough. Completing Asian regional community has been delayed and often interrupted. Uneven development or gaps among countries hinders building the community. Lack of regional sentiment or identity is also a problem. However, we need to explore another important factor which hampers the creation of Asian regionalism. This study examines the competitive relationship between Japan and China in the context of regional community building process. The leadership role of Japan and China are enormously important in the process of Asian regionalism. Nonetheless, they are lukewarm. In Europe, the cooperation of the rival countries of France and Germany has contributed to the highly institutionalized, and then, deeply integrated regional community. However, Asia's giants have their own circumstantial problems. China's governability in domestic politics and Japan's economic advantages in the regional politics are the interests for the countries to protect before the regional community. So, there are inherent contradictions between nations' interests and regional benefits which hinder a full-pledged community.

본 연구는 자살을 예방하는 방법으로 삶에 대한 시야를 확대할 수 있는 방법을 살펴보면서, 최근 빠르게 발전하고 있는 ICT 기술과 기능의 활용 가능성을 논의하고자 한다. 이러한 결과로 청소년 자살문제의 단순히 자살행동에 대응하는 것이 아니라 ICT 기술을 통하여 삶의 시야를 넓히는 것이 보다 청소년 자살문제에 기여할 수 있는바가 적지 않음을 제시한다. 더불어 자살생각과 자살시도의 비중이 구조적으로 높게 나타나는 지에 대한 사회적 구조와 맥락의 분석이 결여되어 있음을 지적하였다. 이러한 문제를 보완하기 위하여 자살 그 자체에 대한 대처와 방책을 제시하기보다는 새로운 관심과 애착을 부여함으로 발생하는 삶의 시야확대가 청소년 자살의 특징인 충동성과 의사표현성을 고려할 때 유용하다. 이러한 방식에서 ICT는 청소년 자살예방에 높은 유용성을 가지고 다양한 차원에서 문제해결에 기여할 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to discuss the possibility of utilizing ICT and its functions which are rapidly developing in recent years, by examining ways to expand the view of life by preventing adolescent suicide. These results suggest that rather than simply responding to suicidal behaviors of adolescent suicide, broadening the horizon of life through ICT can contribute to the problem of suicide. In Korea, adolescent suicide prevention measures are focused on suppressing suicide attempt excessively, and point out that there is lack of analysis of social structure and context about whether the proportion of suicide ideation and suicide attempt is high in structure. In order to overcome this problem, it is useful to consider impulse and expressiveness, which is a characteristic of adolescent suicide, rather than suggesting coping and measures for suicide itself. In this way, ICT can contribute to solving the problem of juvenile suicide at various levels with high usability.
