Device mounting position of an engine control unit in a vehicle is apt to move from passenger room compartment to engine room, as more system functions are integrated into an engine control unit. This trend brings much benefit to car manufacturers on cost- & performance-effective engine room layout design and wiring harness, but also burdens to engine cotrol unit manufactureres with more harsh environmental requirements, like higher operating temperature range and severer vibration condition. The first challenge of engine control unit mounting on air-filter box in engine room compartment is a motive of huge tasks of the operating temperature range definition by many of modeling, simulation and measurements in a vehicle.

LPG injection engine vehicles of today are controlled by 2 separated control units of IFB(Interface Box for injector contol) and PCU(Powertrain Control Unit). Generally it is required for LPI engine vehicles by market needs to develope an IFB integrated single box PCU as a LPCU(Liquefied Petroleum Control Unit). A single box solution of LPCU brings a weight-reduction of vehicles and more robust behaviors of engine management system, especially LPG injection control. This study adopts DFSS(Design for Six Sigma) concept in HMC(Hyundai Motor Company) as a project management method in design, analysis and improvement.
