A bellows can be used as an efficient energy absorbing clement of an automotive steering column. On the other hand, bending flexibility of the bellows has negative effects on the vibration characteristics. An effort is made to improve vibration characteristics of steering columns with bellows. To understand the effects of various design parameters on the collapse and vibration, sensitivity analyses are performed by finite element method using Taguchi's scheme. It is shown that the structure of upper mounting bracket is the most important parameter affecting the vibration characteristics. An optimal design is proposed for a lower tilt type steering columns.

The degree of protection from passenger airbag depends on the details of airbag deployment such as shape and size of the airbag, airbag pressure, vent hole size as well as the size of passenger. Larger passengers require higher airbag pressure than smaller passengers. Adaptive vent systems detect the weight of the passenger and controls the vent hole size with costly mechanisms. In this work, feasibility of an economic alternative system with pressure sensitive vent mechanism is explored. The pressure ? vent rate relation is explored via airbag deployment simulations with reference to drop tower tests with varying drop weight.

Finite element analyses for vehicle crash take a lot of time for model modifications and computations. An alternative to finite element models are rigid mass-spring models in which the springs represent plastic deformation resistances between two rigid blocks. In the commercial code MADYMO the springs are embodied either by sets of point restraints or by sets of kinematic joints. In spite of versatility, point restraints are difficult to set up and the joints are simple but prone to overestimation of deformation resistances. This paper suggests a rigid mass-spring model with combined point restraints and joints to cover crash modes with simultaneous bending and axial crush.

Motivated by the FMVSS 208 and by the practical importance of USNCAP(Unite States New Car Assessment Program), protection of small female occupants in passenger seat is becoming more important. In this work, passenger airbag deployment process has been modeled and analysed by MADYMO software. Four design parameters of passenger airbags have been selected to investigate the directions of design improvement: time to fire, vent hole size, geometry of tethers and inflator pressure. Sensitivity analyses based on orthogonal array show that enhanced protection of small females can be achieved with improved USNCAP rating within the boundary of FMVSS 208.

It is a common experience that some automotive power windows tend to be sluggish during cold weather. The drive current of the power window system increases sharply with decreasing temperature and the ascending speed of the power window glass is greatly reduced. There are several possible sources of such phenomenon: performance characteristics of geared motor, hardening of glass run and internal friction of the cable and pulley type regulator. Experiments have been performed to study the contributions from each source. It is shown that the major contribution comes from the internal friction of the regulator. Suggestions are made regarding the improvement of the power window performance at low temperature

The final goal of this study is to predict the effects of airbag on occupant safety when the passenger is in OOP (Out-Of-Position) condition. To this end, accurate and efficient prediction of airbag deployment is essential. Control volume method and particle method were compared for airbag deployment simulation. The drop tower test was simulated with both methods by commercial code LS-DYNA and the results were compared with the test data. At the initial stages of inflation the particle method showed better agreement with the test data while the control volume method showed better agreement with the test data at the later stages. A rational choice would be to start with the particle method initially and then switch to the control volume method later for the rest of the process.

Automobile airbag deployment process has been studied with MADYMO software. Based on the FMVSS208 and USNCAP(United States New Car Assessment Program) regulations, four parameters were chosen for the design improvement with reference to the 5th percentile female passenger dummy: time to fire, vent hole size, tether length and tank test pressure of inflator. Sensitivity analyses based on orthogonal arrays show that enhanced protection of small females can be achieved with improved USNCAP rating within the boundary of FMVSS 208.

The passenger airbag(PAB) designed for standard sized adults may induce unexpected results to children in outofposition(OOP) postures. In this work, using MADYMO software, simulations of the OOP injury of children have been performed with respect to PAB design parameters and child dummy positions. The attention is focused on some details with respect to the injury of 3 and 6 year old children in two OOP postures. Among the various design parameters of the passenger airbag systems, four parameters are selected for the sensitivity analysis of the injury with the Taguchi method: bag folding pattern, vent hole size, position of the cover tear seam and the type of door tear seam. An optimal combination of the parameters is suggested.
