Sex discrimination is an indispensable and labor-demanding process for production of hybrid eggs in the silkworm Bombyx mori L. Cocoon color character can be effectively applied for sexing if the yellow blood gene Y(Ⅱ-25.6) be artificially translocated onto W chromosome to result in sex-limited trait. A total of 8,618 RF₂ batches had been screened for W-translocation type during the 7-year period of 1982 through 1988. Sex-linked oily gene(Zod) had been used for early screening of female larvae in the RF₂ generation. A single egg-laying of translocation type had been identified from 4th-day female pupae under 6 Krad irradiation in 1988. The frequeneies of the unexpected individuals in both sexes were 7.6% in RF₂ and 6.3±2.4% in RF₃, the variation of which reflects the unstable nature of the translocated chromosome fragment in each genetic background. If the translocation be stabilized through genetic manipulation, parent inbreds be identified for superior hybrids and other economic characters be improved, the translocation type can be utilized for sex discrimination (yellow cocoon for female and white for male) of the inbred to save sexing labor for hybrid egg production.

Antheraea yamamai vitellin was purified from matured eggs by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for characterization of its biochemical properties: molecular weight, sugar and lipid composition, amino acid composition and electron microscopic morphology, etc. 1. A. yamamai vitellin was composed of two subunits, large and small, showing different mobility in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. 2. The molecular weight of the vitellin was estimated to be approximately 450,000 dalton and the large and small subunits were 174,000 dalton and 44,000 dalton, respectively. 3. The vitellin seemed to be a glycolipoprotein since it showed a positive reaction to coomassie brilliant blue, sudan black B and PAS staining. Both subunits were similar in this aspect. 4. Lipid of the witellin revealed several different types including saturated lipids. 5. When the vitellin was incubated at 70°C for 60 minutes its apoprotein still cross-reacted to the specific antiserum to the native vitellin. Its sugar components were also detected by PAS staining, but its lipid portion was not detected by sudan black B staining. 6. Its amino acid composition was similar to that of other insects, but its glycine content was peculiarly very high. 7. The vitellin molecule was spherical in shape with a diameter of 14+0.8nm by negatively stained electron microscopy.

A new silkworm variety "Yangwonjam" for both of spring and autumn rearing season is F1 hybrid between Jam143, a Japanese race bred from H5R1/P8550 and Jam144. a Chinese race from M8312/8190. This is the first both parent sex-limited larval marking variety in Korea, and which contricutes to eggs production of F1 hybrid silkworm with saving labot. Jam,143, Japanese parent of the "yangwonjam" showed high GCa in pupation percentage and Jam144. Chinses parent showed high GCA in pupation percentage and single cocoon weight. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring of 1998, Yangwonjam records 1% higher in pupation percentage and 5%, 4% lower in single cocoon weight, cocoon yield from 10,000 3rd molted larvae respectively than the check varety Kumokjam. Also I the resistance test against unfavorable rearing condition performed in spring of 1997. Yangwonjam records 9%, 14% tower in single cocoon weight. cocoon shell weight respectively than the check variety, but showed 1% higher in pupation percentage than check variety.

Survival analysis with life span of silkworm moth was investigated from 277 varieties preserved and maintained in Korea. Ten varieties showed long and short life span were selected for the investigation of the longevity in response to mating and surviving. The density distributions of average life span of female and male in all varieties used was 8.3days about 13%. The frequency of average survival according to life span survived 178 varieties(64.3%) for 5-10days in male, but the female was survived 147 varieties (53%) for 10-15 days. Average longevity of unmated female and male were respectively 9.5 days and 9.0 days, and female survived 0.5 days longer than male. On the other hand, average longevity of mated female and male were 8.9 days and 7.7 days, respectively. It was found that mating activities affected significantly to the adult life span, especially to that of males than that of females.

Using sexual differences between female and male as the indication of the degree of the physiological disturbance in the sex·limited larval marking strains or sex-limited egg colour strains, it was investigated whether the physiological disturbance caused by the translocated autosome fragment on the W·sex determination chromosome, have an effect on expression of the three quantitative characters; cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, and cocoon shell percentage in the female silkworm. The mean values of the ratios of female to male the above two experimental groups were 127%, 107%, 85%, in cocoon shell weight, and cocoon shell percentage, respectively. On the other hand, those from the three normal strains, namely the basic stock strains, white egg strains, and hybrids were 129% for cocoon weight, 110% for cocoon shell weight, and 85% for cocoon shell percentage, respectively. From the results, it comes to the conclusion that the translocated autosome fragment on the W·chromosome has no influences on the expression of the quantitative characters of the female silkworm because sexual differences of the sex·limited strains were very similar to those of the three normal strains.
