This study investigated the applicability of principal component analysis (PCA) to paper aging. Thermal aged paper was analyzed by physicochemical method and compared with PCA. As paper aging progresses, folding endurance decreased and the oxidation index increased. In addition, PCA was carried out by the second order derivative of the IR spectra and the aged papers were classified by PCA. The main components classified by PCA were carboxyl group and carbonyl group, which are the factors that affect the aging of cellulose. Therefore, PCA can be employed as a tool to measure paper aging using non-destructive methods.
