Purpose: The study aimed to develop an instrument to measure patient safety knowledge, attitude and skills among nursing officers and civilian military nurses working for military hospitals in South Korea. Methods: The primary questionnaire was established through comprehensive literature review and revised after content validity examination by the experts. 480 subjects were asked to participate in the study and finally 434 out of 480 answers were included for the analysis. Psychometric properties of the instrument were examined, including the content and construct validity (exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation) and the reliability (internal consistency). Results: The total number of questions for the final instrument was 71. Attitude (30) and skills (24) questions were psychometrically sound. The reliability of the knowledge (17) questions was low, however, the value of the reliability was estimated within acceptable range. Conclusion: The obtained data using the instrument would be expected to serve as the basis for the patient safety education and evaluation. This study suggested that the developed instrument is a useful tool to investigate the patient safety competencies.

Purpose: This study identifies the concept of `military nursing leadership’ based on a qualitative investigation. Methods: The study is based on Hybrid Model, proposed by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim. The study compromises of 3 steps : theory investigation, field study and final analysis. For theory investigation, we searched various literatures about ‘leadership’. Secondly, field study was conducted through interview and participatant observation of 14 participants (6 patients, 4 peer workers, and 4 nursing officers). Based on the above, we identified conceptual attributes of military nursing leadership. Results: Identified 9 attributes of military nursing leadership are achievement of group goal, respect, leading attitude, communication, educating how to be soldierly, specialty, persuasive power, judgment, and encouragement. Those attributes indicate that military nursing leadership is a process of achieving group goal through communication, educating soldierly manners based on encouragement and respect by nursing officers with specialty, persuasive power and judgement. Conclusion: In this study, we provide a way of understanding definition and 9 attributes of military nursing leadership to make military nursing officers have better apprehensibility. In addition, it can be helpful data in developing concept of military nursing leadership and related educational course.

Purpose : The purposes of this study were to analyze narrative nursing statements retrieved in a military hospital based on the ICNP(International Classification of Nursing Practice) system to develop the standard nursing statements, and to serve as a foundation for establishing an electronic nursing record system. Method : Narrative nursing statements were retrieved in medical/surgical wards of a military hospital, and nursing phenomena, nursing action and other nursing statements were extracted and refined. Mapping statements with ICNP concepts and integration of statements were conducted. Content validity of Statements was examined by experts. Based on how well the ICNP system can explain a statement, statements were categorized into full, partial and non description classes, and frequency of each was investigated. Frequency & Percentage of the ICNP axes and concepts were examined. Results : From 56,193 statements, 2,236 standard nursing statements were extracted. Nursing phenomena statements took a larger portion than nursing action statements. Most of the statements were explained by the ICNP. Nursing statements used only 19.1% of ICNP concepts, indicating nursing officers document similar expressions. Military-specific concepts such as sick-leave were discovered. Conclusion : The standard nursing statements are the foundation for a new electronic nursing record system promising quality care.

Purpose : The purpose of the study is to design army nursing officers` education courses to foster military nursing leaders armed with readiness. Methods : Four steps of a methodological study were carried out. The first step was to conduct a focus group interview in order to analyze nursing tasks according to career levels. Based on the tasks and a comprehensive literature review, army nursing leaders` competencies were investigated and validated. We developed education courses to fill the gap that was found through a gap analysis between current education curriculum and competencies. The final step was to establish an education framework for army nursing leaders in accordance with career and leadership levels. Results : The competencies included conceptual (planning, systematic thinking, change management), human(persuasive power, empowerment, respect, communication), and practical skills(professionalism, human resource development). Comprehensive nursing leadership education courses were established based on 9 competencies for the Army Nursing Corps, taking into account military nursing careers and leadership levels that encompassed strategic, operational and tactical levels. Conclusion : This systematic, serial education course framework was created based on competencies fitting to three leadership levels that army nursing leaders exercised. This will provide a good basis for career development and promote a readiness level among army nursing leaders.
