논자는 이 글에서 근대화를 서구화로 근대성을 서구근대성으로 파악하는 서구중심주의를 비판한다. 그 대신 논자는 전통 속의 근대를 복원하는 작업을 시도한다. 근대의 원래 의미인 ‘지금, 이곳’에서 작동되고 있는 주요 특징들을 객관적으로 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 근대성 탐구는 그 특징의 역사적 기원을 포착하고 재해석하는 것이기 때문이다. 논자는 그 역사적 사례로 계의 조직 원리인 개체성의 원리, 평등성의 원리, 합리성의 원리를 들고 있다. 과거제도와 관료주의 그리고 문치 중심의 중앙집권화 등도 한국 근대의 특징을 보여주는 역사적 사례들이다. 한국의 근대는 이러한 역사적 근대와 식민지적 근대 그리고 미국적 근대가 중층, 중첩, 혼성화 되어 있는 복합적 사태로 구성된다. 이러한 역사적 경로로 인해 한국의 근대화와 근대성은 독자적인 특성을 지닌다. 이를 논자는 ‘복합근대’라고 개념화한다. 논자는 한국 근대의 특징이 다른 국가와 지역에서 다양하게 구성된 다원적인 근대의 특징들과 동등한 지위를 갖는 것으로 파악한다. 논자는 이러한 다원적 근대성들이 공론장에서의 성찰적인 논박과 논증을 통해 보다 보편적인 모습으로 구성될 수 있는 틀로서 ‘열린 공동체주의’를 제안한다. In this paper, the author criticizes Westerncentrism, which sees modernization as Westernization and modernity as Western modernity. Instead, the writer attempts to restore the modernity within the tradition. It is important objectively to grasp the main features that are operating in the original meaning of modern, ‘here and now’. Because the quest for modernity is to capture and reinterpret the historical origin of its features. As a historical example, the writer holds the principle of individuality, the principle of equality, and the principle of rationality in the gye(계, 契). The system of state Examinations, bureaucracy, and centralization of power in Joseon Dynasty etc. are historical examples showing the characteristics of modern Korea. The modernity of Korea is composed of a complex situation in which such historical modernity, colonial modernity and american modernity are multilayered, overlapped and hybrided. Due to this historical path, Korea has its own characteristics of modernization and modernity. This writer conceptualizes it as a ‘complex modern’. The author recognizes that the characteristics of the modern Korea have the same status as the pluralistic modern features of various countries and regions. The author proposes ‘open communitarianism’ as a framework in which these pluralistic modernities can be reconstructed more universally through reflective refutation and argumentation in the public sphere.
