In order to investigate air pollution by heavy metals in Seoul city, the suspended particulates in the atmosphere were sampled with high volume air sampler in industrial area(Ku Ro Dong), commerical(Kwang Hwa Moon) and residential(Shin Chon Dong) from January to November, 1977. The sampled suspended particulates were digested and extracted from suspended particulates with the acidic solution by reflux-extraction technique, and were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. And mercury was measured by mercury analyzer applying the reducing sublimation technique. Among heavy metals analyzed, the iron was identified at the highest level in the suspended particulates and the chromium was the least. Through the surveyed area, the concentration of heavy metals of the industrial area was comparatively high among others and the commercial was the second. It was detected that lead was the most concentrated in the suspended particulate of the commercial area, that might be caused of the traffic emissions. The seasonal variations were analyzed and the correlations among heavy metals and total suspended particulate were also calculated. Especially, the iron was highly correlated with total suspended particulate in all the surveyed areas.

This investigation was undertaken from February 1976 to September 1976. The detergents in municipal sewages from the Chung Kae Stream, Ahn Yang Stream, and Bong Won Stream were determined at 1.5ppm, 0.93ppm, and 3.36ppm in average respectively. The concentrations of detergents determined in the Han river were 0.013ppm of Kwang Na Ru, 0.11ppm of Duk Do, 0.370ppm of Bo Kwang Dong, and 0.285ppm of Ka Yang Dong basin respectively. And the potable waters of Sung Book Ku and Sung Dong Ku from Ku Eu water pumping station located up-stream of the Han river were less polluted at 0.045ppm and 0.037ppm in average. Young Deung Po Ku and Su Dae Moon Ku had been relatively polluted at 0.181ppm and 0.133ppm. The coagulant, alum [$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}$] could eliminated the small amount of detergent by coagulation. The eliminated rates were about 13% by 5ppm and 22.7% by 20ppm of aluminum sulfate in sewage contained 10ppm of turbidity. The sand and the charcoal adsorbed some detergent as the following Langmuir's equations: For the charcoal, m/x=0.029.$\times$1/Ce-11.43 For the charcoal, m/x=2.705log1/Ce-5.46 Where m: amount of snad and active carbon used(g) x: amount of detergent adsorbed from liquid(g) Ce:concentration in the liquid at equilibrium(miles) The adsorption effect of sand would be neglected. In the low concentration of detergent solution, one gram of active carbon adsorbed 0.263g of detergent. It was determined that one gram of chlorine reduced 5.5g pf DBS om keeping up 0.2ppm of residual chlorine by disinfection process with chlorine compound.
Polyoxyethylene-Alkyl Citric Diester-Triethanolamine의 생분해 및 독성에 관한 조사 연구

The authors investigated the biodegradability and toxicity of polyoxyethylene-alkyl citric diester-triethanolamine(PAT), which is one of new non-ionic detergents. 1) The PAT is very biodegradable, which 50% is biodegraded for one day and 100% for eight days by the activated sludge treatment and 40% for one day and 93% for eight days by the aerobic domestic sewage treatment. 2) $LD_{50}$ of PAT for chicken, mouse, and rat by oral adminstration are 7.1g/kg, 8.4g/kg and 14.0g/kg reactively. 3) $TL_{m}$ of PAT for goldfish is 64.0mg/l in 24bours. 4) No reaction for humun skin is determined by PAT.

The pinus trees planted by the road in the Seoul -Suwen high-way was surveyed on the damages due to air pollution during April and May in 1984. The results were as follows ; The concentration of SO$_2$was ranged from 0.003 to 0.05ppm, NOx from 0.03 to 0.1ppm and the amount of dust fall, from 10 to 110ton/km$^2$/month. While the concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as SO$_2$and NOx were notsignificantly different in the type of road and with in the distence of 20 meters from the road the dust falls were decreased as remoted from the road. The tissue damages of leaves were determined by the microscopic observation. The higher concentration of dust fall on the leaf, the more severe damage observed in the stomata. The attached dust of the leaves were ranged from 1l to 75mg/g of leaf, and those were significantly incereased as near from road. The sulfur contents of leaves were measured at 0.15g/100g of leaf in the 5 meters located and at 0.064g/100g of leaf in the 20 meters, and the lead contents, 45ug/g of leaf in the 5 meters and 24ug/g in the 15 meters. The appearent damages of plant were very much corelated to the attached dusts of leaves the sulfur contents and the amount of dust fall, and the multiple regression analysis between the damages and factors of air pollution were under taken. As increment of vehicle in future, the air Pollution was predicted and the plant damages were estimated.

ABS, Alkyl benzene sulfonate, persists for long periods in stream because of its resistance to biologic degradation. Its bio-degradation is very varied in the environments. This investigation was therefore undertaken in order to know the biodegradation of synthetic detergents which are comprising soft and hard forms from February 1976 to September 1976. The biodegradations by spontaneuos settling and aeration were determined. The reduction rates of ABS, DBS, and LAS were 9.8%, 13.7% and 10.4% by the settlings for 5 days at $25^{\circ}$ and 63.3%, 27.2%, and 43.9% by aeration respectively. It was not contributed effectively to biodegradate the synthetic detergents by the simulaneous incubation with micro-organisms isolated from sewage such as Enterobacter sp., E. coli, Bacillus sp., Flavobacterium sp., Pseudomonas sp., Staphylococcus sp., and etc. Tricking filter could also eliminate some amount of detergent. By the application of this investigation, it could be designed that detergents would be regulated in abuse in context with water pollution and be treated at a proper process in the sewage treatment plant to be installed.

This study was carried out to investigate air pollution by total suspended particulate(T.S.P.), benzene soluble matter and benzo(a) pyrene in Seoul city. The sampling areas were divided into commercial(Kwang Hwa Moon), indus-trial(Ku Ro Dong) and residensial area(Shin Chon). Sampling was undertaken by High Voulme Air Sampler for four seasons from January 1917 to November 1977. The T.S.P. was extracted with Soxhlet apparatus by benzene and benzo(a) pyrene was separated by column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The concentrations of benzo(a) pyrene were measured by means of fluorophotometer, and following results were obtained. 1. Arithmetic average concentration for 1-day averaging time of total suspended particulate were $275.6ug/m^3$ in Kwang Hwa Moon, $325.9ug/m^3$ in Ku Ro Dong and $193.0ug/m^3$ in Shin Chon. 2. The seasonal variance of total suspended parti-culate at Ku Ro Dong and Shin Chon were $102.7ug/m^3\;99.6ug/m^3$ respectively and at Kwang Hwa Moon $39.9ug/m^3$. And the concentration of autumn is higher than of that spring at Ku Ro Dong and at Shin Chon, but at Kwang Hwa Moon, the seasonal variance is very little. 3. The concentrations of 50% frequency from geometric mean for 1-day averaging time were $264ug/m^3,\;300ug/m^3\;and\;178ug/m^3$ at Kwang Hwa Moon, Ku Ro Dong and Shin Chon. And geometric standard deviation were 1.27, 1.38 and 1.41 respectively. 4. The concentrations of benzene soluble mater were $26.9ug/m^3$ at Kwang Hwa Moon, $22.7ug/m^3$ at Ku Ro Dong and $15.5ug/m^3$ at Shin Chon, and the ratios to the T.S.P. were 9.8%(range 5.6-14.8%), 7.0%(range 2.4-14.4%) and 8.0%(range 5.5-22.1%) respectively. 5. The concentrations of benzo(a) pyrene were $8.5ug/m^3$ (range $0.8-29.9ug/m^3$) at Kwang Hwa Moon $10.9ug/m^3$(range $1.1-52.0ug/m^3$) at Ku Ro Dong and $5.8ug/m^3$(range $1.5-11.4ug/m^3$) at Shin Chon. 6. The results of this investigation were relatively high in compared with the recommended standards of suspended particulate in air of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and observed levels of benzo(a)-pyrene in U.S. city.
