        Different potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars mediated life-history variables of the potato leafminer, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae)

        Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) is an emerging pest of potatoes in Korea. Host selection is crucial for the survival of leafminer as immatures have limited mobility and selection is often influenced by the host quality. A potato choice made by leafminer is guided by cultivar characteristics. To determine the effects of potato cultivars on the life variables of leafminer, a feeding preference of adult leafminer was examined by offering a choice of 21 different potato cultivars: ‘Superior’, ‘Hongyeong’, ‘Seohong’, ‘Chuyeong’, ‘Chudong’, ‘Jinseon’, ‘Bangul’, ‘Saebong’, ‘Jowon’, ‘Goun’, ‘Jopung’, ‘Hongseon’, ‘Dejima’, ‘Atlantic’, ‘Jayeong’, ‘Namseo’, ‘Chubake’, ‘Haryeong’, ‘Jeseo’, ‘Oryun’, and ‘Minseo’. The preference and performance of adult leafminer were varied significantly among cultivars. L. huidobrensis showed a preference for the Goun cultivar. Adult showed poor performance toward less attractive and poor in quality cultivars such as cv. Oryun. There was a significant relationship between choice and performance, and between plant morphology and performance. The results suggest that higher preference and performance of L. huidobrensis on cv. Goun and least on cv. Oryun might be governed by morphology as well as chemical attributes of potato cultivars. These variables estimated in this study can serve as a basis for selecting potato cultivars with resistant characteristics and can be applied as a pest management tool for leafminers at minimal costs. However, field experiments are needed to obtain concrete information about leafminer behavior relative to potato cultivars.

        감자 품종별 해충 발생 양상

        우리나라에서 감자의 장려품종으로 지정된 7개 품종(남작, 수미, 대지, 세풍, 조풍, 남서, 대서)에 대한 해충의 발생양상을 조사하기 위하여 1996년 강릉과 대관령 포장에서 살충제를 처리하지 않고 재배기간동안 해충종류 및 밀도를 조사하였다. 흡즙성해충으로 복숭아혹진딧물(Myzus persicae Sulzer)과 감자수염진딧물(Marcrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas)이, 잎을 가해하는 해충으로는 파밤나방(Spodoptera exigua Hubner) 유충이, 땅속으로 괴경을 가해하는 해충으로 청동방아벌레(Selatosomus puncticollis Mot.) 유충이, 땅속에서 괴경을 가해하는 해충으로 청동방아벌레(Selatosomus puncticollis Mot.) 유충이 각각 우점종으로 밝혀졌다. 품종별 진딧물 밀도는 대지, 남작, 세풍 품종에서 50엽당 평균 22.7, 30. 7, 32.3 마리로 낮은 반면, 수미와 남서 품종은 46.3와 42.3마리로 높았다. 파밤나방 유충에 의한 피해엽은 세풍과 조풍 품종이 시험구당 평균 11.0과 14.3엽으로 적었고, 대지와 남서 품종이 153.3과 134.7엽으로 많았다. 정동방아벌레 유충에 의한 괴경피해율은 남작, 수미, 대지, 조풍 품종이 8.1, 10.3, 13.9, 14.0%로 낮았으나, 남서와 세풍 품정은 50.5%, 46.8%로 매우 높았다. Occurrence pattern of major insect pests on 7 recommended potato cultivars in Korea was investigated from sowing to harvesting time at Kangneung and Daegwallyung experiment fields in 1996. Green peach aphid (Mym persicae Sulzer), potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas) and beet armyworm (Spodoptera enigua Hubner) were the major insect pests on potato leaves, and wireworm (Selatosomus puncticollis Mot.) was the major pest on tubers. There was a slight difference of average number of aphids per 50 leaves among cultivars; ranged from 22.7 on cv. Dejima to 46.3 on cv. Superior. Numbers of leaves damaged by beet armyworm larvae on cv. Shepody and cv. Jopung were 11.0 and 14.3, and these cultivars are thought to be resistant against the larvae infestation. However, degree of damage on cv. Dejima and cv. Namsuh was higher 10 times than cv. Shepody and cv. Jopung. In wireworm, the percentage of damaged tubers on cv. Irish Cobbler was lowest of 8.1%, and followed by cv. Superior, cv. Dejima, cv. Jopung, and cv. Atlantic. Whereas, those on cv. Namsuh and cv. Shepody were significantly high of 50.0% and 46.8%.

        In South Korea, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death, which is the highest rank among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. Suicidal behaviors have shown a significant association with addiction, including internet abuse and dependence in South Korea. Internet addiction is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations,urges, or behaviors regarding computer use and internet access. Therefore, we overviewed the relationship of internet addiction and suicidal behaviors in this article. The relationship between internet addiction and suicide was confirmed. The first is the biological approach related to reward systems, cognitive function, brain neurotransmitters, and gene expression. The second is the psychopathological approach associated with depression, anxiety, impulse control,and substance-related disorders including diseases such comorbidities. Finally, the third is the socio-environmental approach related to the contextual stimuli and social isolation and alienation caused by the lack of support and low self-esteem. In conclusion, internet addiction is significantly associated with suicidal behaviors. Internet addiction is a medical condition which is treatable and preventable, and suicide behaviors caused by internet addiction can be controlled through early diagnosis and treatment. Based on a growing body of research on the cause and effect relationship of internet addiction and suicide, various interventions of protection and prevention have been studied.

        큰이십팔점박이무당벌레(Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky))의 생태적 특성 및 강릉지역 발생소장

        The seasonal fluctuation of the large 28-spotted lady beetle, Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky), was observed in potato fields of Gangneung region, Gangwondo Province. The effects of their leaf consumption over a 24 hour period and developmental periods by different temperatures were investigated, and then the developmental threshold (DT) and effective cumulative temperature (ET) of each stage were calculated. Various developmental stages of H. vigintioctomaculata were captured in the fields from May to September, with three peaks in late May, late June, and late August. Leaf consumption by larval stages increased with the development of instar. The 4th instar larvae consumed potato leaves much more than other stages. Egg hatchability and emergence rate of H. vigintioctomaculata were lower at $10^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but higher at around $20{\sim}23^{\circ}C$. The developmental periods of each stage became shorter as temperature increased; 90 days at $10^{\circ}C$, 40 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and 25 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Base on developmental velocity to temperature, calculated DT and ET were $7.3^{\circ}C$ and 83. 큰이십팔점박이무당벌레(Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky))의 강릉지역 발생소장과 발육단계별 감자잎 섭식량 및 온도별(10, 15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$) 발육소요기간을 조사하였다. 큰이십팔점박이무당벌레는 연 3회, 즉 5월 하순, 6월 하순 및 8월 하순에 발생하였으며, 특히 5월 하순부터 7월 중순까지 높은 밀도로 발생하여 감자 식물체를 집중적으로 가해하였다. 발육단계별 감자잎 섭식량은 유충의 영기가 진전될수록 많았으며, 4령 유충기에 가장 많은 섭식량을 보였다. 큰이십팔점박이무당벌레 부화율과 우화율은 각각 $10^{\circ}C$ 및 $30^{\circ}C$에서는 매우 낮았고 $20{\sim}23^{\circ}C$에서 가장 높았다. 알에서 성충으로 우화되기까지 발육단계별 생육기간은 온도가 증가함에 따라 감소하였는데, $10^{\circ}C$에서 90일 정도로 매우 느렸으며 $20^{\circ}C$에서는 40여일, $25^{\circ}C$에서는 25일이 소요되었다. 또한 발육영점온도와 유효적산온도는 알에 대해서 $7.3^{\circ}C$와 83.3 DD, 유충에 대해서 $5.2^{\circ}C$와 294.1 DD, 번데기에 대해서 $6.2^{\circ}C$와 97.1 DD이었다.

        대마초 및 메스암페타민 남용자들의 기질 및 성격 특성

        Objectives : This study aims to identify temperament and characteristics of cannabis and methamphetamine abusers for elucidating psycho-biological variables related to certain substance abuse. Methods : A total of 320 patients who registered in the 'Hepatitis C cohorts study of intravenous drug users' between March 2006 and March 2010 participated in this study. Data on demographic variables were obtained and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and measures for nicotine dependence, alcohol dependence, depression and anxiety were assessed. After comparing TCI between cannabis, methamphetamine, and co-abusers, correlations between TCI and other clinical variables were examined. Results : The methamphetamine abuser group showed significantly higher scores in Novelty Seeking (NS2) and Harm Avoidance (HA3) in temperament than the cannabis abuser and co-abuser groups, whereas the cannabis abuser group had higher scores in purposefulness (SD2), congruent second nature (SD5), and self-directedness (SD) in character than the methamphetamine abuser group. In addition, temperaments and characters correlated with various psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions : We found the differences in temperament and characters among cannabis abusers, methamphetamine abusers. These findings might contribute to further understanding of mechanisms of cannabis and methamphetamine abuse.

        랏트의 기관내 Fe 노출후 Fe 이동에 대한 연구

        Objectives : Iron (Fe) is an essential element in biological processes; however excessive Fe is harmful to human health. Some air pollutants contain a high level of Fe, and the human lung could therefore be over-exposed to Fe through inhaled air pollutants. This study was performed to investigate the role of metal transporters (divalent metal transporter 1, DMT1, and metal transporter protein 1, MTP1) in the lung under the environments of Fe deficiency in the body and Fe over-exposure in the lung. Methods : Rats were fed Fe deficient (FeD, 2-6 mg Fe/kg) or Fe supplemented (FeS, 120 mg Fe/kg) diet for 4 weeks, followed by a single intratracheal instillation of ferrous sulfate at low (10 mg/kg) or high (20 mg/kg) dose. Fe concentration was analyzed in the serum, lung and liver, and histopathological findings were observed in the lung at 24 hours after Fe administration. The level of DMT1 and MTP1 expression in the lung was analyzed by RT-PCR. Also, the effect of Fe deficiency in the body was evaluated on the level of Fe concentration and metal transporters compared to FeS-diet fed rats at the end of 4-week FeD or FeS diet. Results : The 4-week FeD diet in rats induced an Fe deficiency anemia with decreased serum total Fe, increased unsaturated Fe binding capacity and hypochromic microcytic red blood cells. The concentration of Fe in the lung and liver was lower in the FeD-diet fed rats than in the FeS-diet fed rats. The level of metal transporters mRNA expression was higher in the FeD-diet fed rats than in the FeS-diet. The concentration of Fe in the lung was increased in a dose-dependent pattern after intratracheal instillation of Fe into the rats, while the level of Fe in the serum and liver was not increased in the low-dose Fe administered rats. Therefore, DMT1 and MTP1 mRNA was highly expressed in both FeD-diet and FeS-diet fed rats, after intratracheal instillation of Fe. Conclusions : DMT1 and MTP1 mRNA were more highly expressed in FeD-diet fed rats than in FeS-diet fed rats. The over-exposure of Fe intratracheally induced high expression of metal transporters and increased Fe deposition in the lung in both FeD-diet and FeS-diet fed rats, but did not increase the Fe level of the serum and liver in low-dose Fe administered rats. These results suggest that the role of metal transporters in the lung might be different in a part from the duodenum under the environment of over-exposure to Fe.
