일반적으로 기업들의 재무성과에 큰 영향을 주는 여러 계정과목 중 하나는 매출채권에 대한 대손충당금인데, 대손충당금 설정에 대한 대표이사의 재량권 행사가 가능한 만큼 대표이사 변경시점에서 이를 이용한 Big Bath 현상이 빈번하게 나타난다. 이에 본 연구에서는 조선 산업 내 기업들의 대표이사 교체에 따른 대손충당금 설정을 통한 Big Bath 현상의 분석을 위해 조선업 주요 3사인 A사, B사, C사를 사례연구 기업으로 선정하여 이들 기업과 비교 분석을 이루었다. 2001년부터 2015년까지 수차례에 걸쳐 대표이사가 교체되었는데, 분석 결과 2008.9.15. 리먼 브러더스 사태 이후 세계경기가 침체하면서 조선 산업 주요 3사 모두 2012년과 2015년에 경영성과에 큰 변동이 있었으며 전형적인 Big Bath 현상이 공통으로 나타났다. 영업손실이 크게 발생할수록 Big Bath를 통한 이익조정 금액은 상대적으로 비례하여 더 큰 금액을 대손충당금으로 계상한다. 또한, 영업손실을 발생시켜 당기순손실 금액에 최대한 반영시키고, 세계경기 침체기에는 미회수채권 증가로 인해 전반적인 대손충당금 설정률이 증가하게 되고 더욱이 대표이사 교체시점을 계기로 Big Bath를 통한 이익조정 현상은 더욱 높게 나타나는데, 특히 대표이사가 일정 기간 경과 후 재임용 시점에 더욱 많은 Big Bath 현상이 나타난 것으로 분석되었다. 이처럼 대표이사 재임용 시점에서 대손상각률과 대손충당금설정비율 변동이 크게 나타나는 것은 경영자의 의지가 담겨 있을 수 있으며, 대표이사 교체시점에 최대한 대손충당금 설정을 통해 부실채권을 깨끗이 정리하고, 대표이사 교체 이후에는 실적 개선을 통해 이해관계자로부터 경영실적 호전 등으로 신임을 받기 위한 목적으로 해석된다. 본 연구에서는 조선업 주요 3사에서 보여지는 Big Bath가 의심되는 연도와 의심되지 않는 연도를 나누어서, 분석하였는데, 컨설팅 분야에서도 다양한 기업들의 연구에 많은 도움이 될 것이다. Normally, one of several of accounts that have the Big impact on the financial performance of the companies is the allowance for bad debts for accounts receivable. There are several Big Bath cases on the changed time of CEO who has the power of setting on the scale of the allowance for bad debts. This paper shows main 3 companies that had Big Bath cases on the allowance for bad debts according to the CEO change in the shipbuilding industry. The CEOs of the companies were changed several times from 2001 to 2015. Three companies had large fluctuations in business performance in 2012 and 2015. Specially, it was on the global financial crisis(2008). And normal Big Bath on the companies showed. The more operating losses occurred, the Bigger Big Bath increased in the allowance for bad debts. In addition, the more operating loss occurred, CEO tried to increase the net loss amount. During the world economic downturn, the uncollected accounts receivable increased. New CEO tried to increase the earning management after the time of inauguration. CEO might have the intention that get rid of the uncertain risk of bad debts. From the responsible year, it is interpreted for the purpose of getting a good evaluation from stake holders. This paper separates each year by the suspected year and the non-suspected year in Big Bath. It will help research method for other companies.

The purpose of this study is to study the structural problems regarding the Big Bath related to earnings management to companies. This paper examines the behavior of Big Bath on CEO changes and suggests alternatives to structural problems. CEO are always tempted to control earnings. This is because the ability of CEO is evaluated according to how much profit the company makes. It is natural that it is necessary to raise profits under CEO`s management, but it is very difficult actually. Earnings adjustments under accounting method can be made easily. The previous study showed a new CEO had tried to arrange the bad debts through the allowance for accounts receivable loss as much as possible. In other words, the new CEO does not have responsibility for management on the first year. Through it, a new CEO can show the improvement in earnings from the following year and receive the trust from shareholders and investors. In this study, we will look at the system structure of the Big Bath. Through this, we will look at the problems of the structure of the company and consider the alternative.
