This paper is intended to critically review the existing argument that a change in the employment status of women is defined as career interruption caused by life event and responsibility of gender role that comes with it. The paper is also aimed at approaching the reality women faces by differently asking the reason why they quit their jobs. To this end, the survey conducted on women in their 30s and 40s living in Seoul was analyzed. The analysis showed that reasons for quitting the job had significant result depending on the ages, level of education, period of career interruption, employment status at the time of quitting, whether they had a spouse or children and the size of the company. In all variants except for period of career interruption, reasons falling in the category of ‘working condition’ accounted for the highest portion for leaving their workplace. Reasons behind quitting the job were analyzed in more details by the size of their workplace. Women who worked at a small sized company quit their job mostly due to ‘low wage’ and those who worked at a large company left their workplace mainly due to ‘expiration of contract’.
