Vol.3 No.1

The purpose of the study was to find an effect of Medium Chain Triglycerids (MCT) diet on cholesterol metabolism in rat. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed two different diets containing MCT(trioctanoate) and corn oil respectively. After feeding to each group for four weeks, the levels of serum and liver cholesterol, the excretion rates of fecal and biliary steroids, and also bile acid composition were investigated. The results obtained from the study are as follows : (1) The average body weight gain in MCT group was almost same as that in the corn oil group. (2) The concentration of serum cholesterol in MCT group was lower than that in the corn oil group. Therefore it is confirmed that the cholesterol lowing action of MCT diet was practically high. (3) The concentrations of liver cholesterol and Triglyceride in MCT group were almost same as that in the corn oil group. Therefore it is thought that the level of liver lipids was not influenced by the difference of diet in this study. (4) The excretion rate of fecal neutral steroid in MCT group was significantly lower than that in the corn oil group, while the rate of fecal bile acid excretion was about same in both MCT and corn oil group. (5) The composition rates of fecal bile acid such as cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid and deoxycholic acid, a secondary acid of cholic acid, in MCT group were significantly lower than that in the corn oil group. (6) The excretion rates of biliary cholesterol and bile acid in MCT group were significantly higher than that in the corn oil group, while the composition rates of biliary bile acid such as chenoddeoxycholic acid and deoxycholic acid in MCT group were significantly higher than that in the corn oil group.

Vol.17 No.3

Fatty acid patterns were determined for 11 and 19 brands of household margarines from the local markets in Korea in 1983 and 1984, respectively. Gas-liquid chromatographic analyses on OV-275 column showed that the average content of total trans fatty acids was 18% ranging from 6.2 to 35.5% for the margarines produced in 1983. The prototype of trans fatty acids was trans-octadecenoic acid. There was a small amount of c, t-or t, c-octadecadienoic, whereas there were practically no t, t-octadecadienoic acid. Trans fatty acids was increased in proportion to linoleic acid contents. For the margarines produced in 1984.. percentage of trans fatty acids tended to decrease, while that of linoleic acid was increased as compared with the corresponding values for the 1983 products. Thus, the P/S ratio was increased markedly in the soft type margarines produced in 1984. However, Korean margarines contained seemingly less linoleic acid than that contained in Japanese margarines.

Vol.21 No.3

White Leghorn hens were fed a commercial formula feeds as a basal diet, which was supplemented with 3 types of plant oil safflower, evening primrose and pine seed, at the 10% level for 3 weeks. No significant changes was found between the basal diet and the oil feeding trials in the egg yolk cholesterol content, the laying rate, the egg weight, and the yolk weight, except the feed intake. In the fatty acid composition of the egg yolk lipid, however, the plant oil feedings to hens resulted in considerable increase of $C_{18:2}$ acid with a simultaneous decrease of $C_{18:2}$ acid ,and, consequently, followed by the improvement of balance with P /S and P /M /S ratio close to 1.0 and 1:1:1, which is known a desirable ratio for human health in lipid nutrition, respectively.
