The complementation patterns of the verb commit are quite complex, including ‘commit to V-ing’ and `commit to V-inf’ patterns. These two patterns behave differently in terms of syntax and semantics. This paper performs a corpus investigation to look into the authentic uses of these two complementation patterns and understand how they are different. The paper suggests that the verb’s dynamic or stative property plays a key role in choosing one of the two complementation patterns. Our corpus investigation indicates the ‘V-ing’ pattern is predominantly used in a dynamic context rather than in a stative context. We suggest that this difference in frequency has to do with the goal or direction oriented meaning of the preposition ‘to’, whose usages have increased in the present day English, as also suggested by Rudanko (2011).
