A total of 80 pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] with an average body weight of 72.9 ± 2.6 kg were used in the present study to investigate the effects of fermented whole crop wheat and barley with or without supplementing inoculums throughout the restricted feeding in finishing pigs. There were 4 replicate pens per treatment. Pigs were fed ad libitum throughout the experiment as the control (CON), and the other four groups were restricted to 10% in the CON diet and fed ad libitum fermented whole crop cereals: fermented whole crop barley with inoculums; fermented whole crop barley without inoculums; fermented whole crop wheat with inoculums; and fermented whole crop wheat without inoculums. During the entire experiment, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) decreased in the fermented barley and fermented wheat groups compared to the CON, while no difference was observed in the average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (gain : feed ratio, G : F) between the control and fermented whole crop barley, wheat diet group. Dry matter and nitrogen digestibility did not show a significant difference among the treatments. In the blood constituents, concentrations of blood urea nitrogen were significantly lower in pigs fed fermented whole crop barley without inoculum diets compared with the other treatments. In conclusion, restricted feeding with fermented whole crop barley and wheat regardless of the supplementing inoculums showed no significant difference in growth performance compared to the CON. This suggests that there is a possibility that fermented whole crop barley and wheat could replace part of the conventional diets.

The purpose of this study was to compare the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microflora, blood profiles and meat quality of broilers, Korean native chickens and white semi broilers under identical feeding conditions. Sixty 1-d chicks of each type were randomly placed into 12 pens per cage (5 chicks per cage) and fed commercial diets for 28, 49, and 28 days, respectively. The broilers showed a significantly higher (p < 0.05) growth performance from 0 to 4 weeks compared with the other types. Korean native chickens had a significantly higher (p < 0.05) digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen than that of the other species. The blood glucose was significantly higher in the Korean native chickens compared to the other species, and the blood cholesterol was significantly lower. The Lactobacillus content in Korean native chickens was significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to the other species, and the E. coli content in the broilers was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the Korean native chickens and white semi broilers. In terms of meat quality, the breast meat of the broilers had a high water content and pH level. The breast meat of the white semi broilers had a significantly lower (p < 0.05) shear force than that of the other species. In conclusion, there was an interspecific physiological difference due to the age and body weight of the chickens. The broilers had a higher growth performance and meat quality compared to the Korean native chickens and white semi broilers.

In modern livestock industry, the use of antibiotics in the diets was strictly prohibited. Currently many additives are studied and used as antibiotic substitutes. Among them, we reviewed the effects of supplement charcoal in monogastric livestock`s feed additives. Supplement charcoal in diets showed improvement of growth performance and improved immune response to mycotoxin. Moreover, in faeces of fattening pigs, charcoal reduced emission of noxious gases and faecal pH and fecal microflora. The use of charcoal as feed additives has a positive benefit on livestocks.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Essential oils (EO) on the storage and improvement of quality of dog food. These treatments were as follows : CON (ether extract (EE)/ crude protein (CP) ratio 〈 0.5), and TRT (EE/CP ratio > 0.5). In the test for antioxidant effect, EO was sprayed to the food surface to observe the delay of corruption by external observation. In the test for quality improvement, the sample was diluted and the microorganism was observed. With regard to decayed time, storage time was improved in EO treatment than CON on 1.1 days. Lactobacillus content was significantly increased (P 〈 0.05) in EO treatment than CON. Salmonella and E. coli contents were significantly decreased (P 〈 0.05) in EO treatment than CON. In conclusion, antioxidant function and storage stability of the feeds with the EE/CP ratio above 0.5 were improved by EO supplementation on dog diets. The quality of the feed was improved by controling contents of pathogen microorganisms.

Oats are used for livestock feed in the world. This experiment was conducted at Goesan Gun of Korea in 2015. The objective of this study was to evaluate oat (Darkhorse) cultivars with high-yielding and a quality for forage adaptable in spring planting seasons. Experimental design was split-plot design with three replications. A split plot design was used with seeding date on the main plots and other treatments fully randomized in sub-plots. Plant dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and ash were significantly affected by seeding dates. The pH and gas production were affected by planting period when incubated with rumen microbes. Harvested oat from early planting is more useful in composition of useful nutrients and degradation by rumen microbes.
