현존하는 제주어의 특징을 찾아 한글자모의 기원인 가림토문자에서 부터 아래아의 훈민정음, 광개토대왕비문, 광개토대왕비문의 특징을 살린 평보 서희환의 서예한글, 추사 김정희의 제주 유배 시에 완성된 작품들을 토대로 서체의 특징들을 고찰하였고, 제주의 자연환경과 문화풍습과 어우러진 제주의 이미지를 담은 서체를 개발하기 위해 제주화산섬에 산재해 있는 현무암이야말로 제주인의 강인함을 표현할 수 있는 좋은 소재로 제주 상징서체에 현무암의 이미지 질감을 표현하여 ‘제주 현무암체’로 만들었다. 지정서체인 돋움체는 ‘제주 하르방체’로 네이밍하였는데 그 특징은 제주의 소중한 문화유산의 하나인 ‘정낭’의 정주석과 정주목을 표현하였고, 바탕체인 ‘제주 은갈치체’는 제주의 초가형태의 특징과 가로줄기의 첫 부분과 맺음 부분의 세리프는 제주의 억새와 은갈치의 부드러움을 서체에 담았다. To develop a font representing image of natural environment, linguistic characteristics and socio-cultural backgrounds of Jeju Island, we have reviewed diverse calligraphic designs from Garimto letters, Hunminjeongeum, the monumental inscription of Gwanggaeto the Great, calligraphic designs of (Pyeongbo) Seo Heehwan and calligraphic works of (Chusa) Kim Jeong-hui made during his exile in Jeju Island. We find that basaltic rock scattered around the island is an ideal material for the new font which can depict the toughness and tenacity of Jeju people. Based on such diverse elements and texture of basaltic rocks, we make a font called `Jeju Hyunmooam.` The default sans-serif typeis named as `Jeju Harubang,` which illustrates the Jeongjusek and Jeongjumok of `Jeongrang,` one of prestigious cultural heritage of Jeju. The serif type is called `Jeju Eungalchi,` which represents smooth lines of a local straw-roofed house, as well as softness of silver grass and hairtail fish on serifs at the starting / ending points of horizontal lines.
