The objective of this work is to have much understanding of the life and the long-term performance of PEFC in transportation application which has start up/shut down, transient operation, and long-term storage without operation. To achieve the goal, we have conducted several approaches such as actual drive tests, simulated drive cycle tests, and accelerated tests. As a result of these studies, this paper presents a PEFC stack performance degradation mechanism which is composed of several failure modes like carbon support corrosion, Pt sintering/migration, radical attack, edge failure, and so on. The key component MEA and its materials simultaneously lose their functions in real operation. The damage on electrodes shows a rapid power loss in short-term operation, and the damage on membrane leads a fatal failure in long-term operation. In other words, PEFC stack lifetime is strongly related with repeated damages to the MEA in various vehicle operating conditions being made by car environment using start/stop, driving, stop(storage) and PEFC stack operating variables such as temperature, pressure, humidity, and so on. I and my colleagues hope that this study will support technology developments for enlarging PEFC durability.

Maximum PEMFC stack power is one of the important criteria in its application. Most FCV has increased its maximum stack power up to 100㎾ to take some design margins such as service lifetime, vehicle drivability, and fuel cell system efficiency. Hyundai / Kia Motors have already unveiled in-house 80㎾ class stack in 2005. And also new bipolar plate design concepts for higher power beyond 80㎾ were demonstrated in 2007. Within the framework of this study. new stack design concepts have been characterized by various tests such as neutron imaging, cell voltage stability and performances with various operating conditions. The results obtained in new stack are compared with the old one.
