Vol.14 No.4
This study is to examine what differences are shown by aroma inhalation according to the academic stress level during the cognitive task performance. For this, after testing academic stress with 140 girls' middle school students, they were divided into higher stress group of 20 girls and lower stress group of 20 girls. They were asked to perform cognitive task for 5 minutes and 10 seconds before and after aroma inhalation respectively and differences between EEG activation of prefrontal lobe were examined to seek how to use aroma according to academic stress level. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, there were differences in the right frontal lobe of two groups according to changes of EEG activation of prefrontal lobe. The lower academic stress group showed the increase of Alpha wave and decrease of Low-Beta wave in low level of difficulty after aroma inhalation and the higher academic stress group showed the opposite result. The lower academic stress group showed decrease of High-Beta/Alpha ratio reflecting mental stress in high level of difficulty. These findings suggested that the aroma inhalation was more effective in improving learning efficiency by reducing metal stress in the state of lower academic stress. Second, according to right and left asymmetry changes, the lower academic stress group showed activation of the left brain in Mid-Beta, and High-Beta after aroma inhalation compared to the higher academic stress group. Asymmetrical activation of left brain by such an aroma inhalation suggested that the effects of aroma inhalation could be induced to increase adaptation and efficiency of cognitive task.
