Evaluation of Near Data Processing System for Gen-Z connected Storage Class Memory

The trend toward big data and artificial intelligence is leading to a dramatic increase in data that needs to be processed in the system. A SCM-based large capacity memory connected by serial interconnect is expected to be an efficient way to continuously improve a performance of the systems while overcoming the cost and capacity of DRAM. However, for data intensive workloads, the performance is significantly reduced due to the high latency and low bandwidth characteristics of the SCM-based system. In this paper, we evaluate a Near Data Processing (NDP) architecture to mitigate the workload dependency of the performance in the SCM-based large capacity memory system connected by Gen-Z interconnect. The experimental result shows that the performance can be improved by 1.7 times in the proposed system.
