Background Force imbalances of the upper trapezius (UT) and lower trapezius (LT) can occur abnormal scapular motion. Purpose To investigate the most effective intervention of specifically activating the LT muscle while decreasing UT muscle activity by comparing the muscle activity generated during four different exercises. Study design Cross-sectional study. Methods 15 healthy male were recruited for this study. Surface electromyographic data were recorded from the upper trapezius and lower trapezius muscle of the dominant side while performing four different exercises: modified prone cobra, prone V-raise, wall slide exercise, and backward rocking diagonal arm lift. The results were analyzed using one-way repeated ANOVA. Results The LT and UT muscle activities and LT/UT ratio were significantly different among the four exercises (p<0.05). LT muscle activity was greatest during the backward rocking diagonal arm lift and not significantly different from that during the prone V-raise (p>0.05). The LT/UT ratio was also greatest during the backward rocking diagonal arm lift and was not significantly different from that during the modified prone cobra (p>0.05). The UT muscle activity was signifi¬cantly lower during the modified prone cobra than during the other exercises (p<0.001), followed by the backward rocking diagonal arm lift. Conclusions The backward rocking diagonal arm lift should be considered effective as a exercise for the LT muscle while decreasing UT muscle activity. A scapular posterior tilt should be confirmed during exercise testing.
초음파 사용이 건강한 여성의 피부 탄력과 피부 깊은 탄력 개선에 미치는 영향

Purpose : Aging is reflected on the face of women due to the depletion of collagen and hydration in the facial skin overtime. This study investigated the effect of multiple SONO® ultrasound for a 4-week period on the skin health by measuring the skin elasticity and deeper skin elasticity in the tested women subjects. Methods : Twenty healthy women were recruited for this experiment. All the participants applied multiple ultrasound device (SONO®) during this experiment. The SONO® device was set to ANTI-AGING function and five power steps such as 1, 3, 10 and 17 ㎒ were used during this experiment, and directly contacted with the facial skin. Specifically, the probe was contacted with the entire face except for the nose and eyes for 10 min on each side of the face every day and repeated for 4 weeks. The skin elasticity and the elasticity of deeper skin were measured at three times (0, 2, 4 weeks) using a Ballistometer and dermal torque meter, respectively. The one way repeated ANOVA was used to compare the skin elasticity and the elasticity of deeper skin among three times (0, 2, 4 weeks). Results : The skin elasticity (p<.05) and elasticity of deeper skin (p<.05) were significantly increased at 2 weeks and 4 weeks of intervention compared to that at 0 weeks. For the skin elasticity, there was no significant difference between 2 and 4 weeks of intervention (p>.05). For the elasticity of deeper skin, it increased significantly at 4 weeks compared to 2 weeks of intervention (p<.05). Conclusion : These findings suggest that applying multiple SONO® ultrasound to the facial skin of healthy women for 4 weeks, can increase the skin elasticity and elasticity of deeper skin by supporting epidermal hydration and dermal collagen production.
호흡근훈련 유무에 따른 안정화 운동이 건강한 성인의 호흡 기능과 자세 동요에 미치는 영향

Purpose : Stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training are used to train trunk muscles that affect postural control and respiratory function. However, there have been no studies that combine stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training on respiratory function and postural sway. Methods : Fifteen healthy adults were recruited for this experiment. All the subjects performed stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. For stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball wearing a stretch sensor. The subjects inspire maximally as long as possible during lifting one foot off the ground, alternately for 30 seconds. The stretch sensor was placed on both anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and the stretch sensor was used to monitor inspiration. For stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball and lifted one foot off the ground, without respiratory muscle training. Kinovea program used to investigate postural sway tracking during exercise. The maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured using a spirometer to investigate changes of respiratory muscle strength before and after exercise. A paired t-test was used to determine significant differences postural sway tracking, MIP, and MEP between stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. Results : There were significantly lower a distance of postural sway tracking during stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, compared with stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training (p<.05). The MIP and MEP were significantly increased after stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training compared with before stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle trianing (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that stabilization exercise with repiratory muscle training would be recommended to improve postural control and respiratory muscle strength.
위등세모근에 적용한 허혈성 압박기법이 월 슬라이드 운동 시 앞톱니근과 위등세모근의 근활성도에 미치는 영향

Background It is known that a wall slide exercise is required to strengthen the serratus anterior. However, overactivation of the upper trapezius during wall slide exercise reduces serratus anterior muscle activation. There is no study that Ischemic compression affects upper trapezius and serratus anterior muscle activity. Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ischemic compression applied to the upper trapezius muscle on the muscle activity of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior during wall slide exercise. Methods A total of 15 healthy male volunteers were recruited for this study. Before and after applying ischemic compression, muscle activity of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior was compared during the wall slide exercise. The electromyographic data of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior was measured using 4D-MT, 2EM. The difference between before and after ischemic compression was analyzed using the paired t-test with p<0.05 as a significant level. Results The upper trapezius muscle activity was significantly decreased (p = 0.014) and serratus anterior muscle activity was significantly increased (p = 0.002) when wall slide exercise after ischemic compression versus before ischemic compression. Conclusions The ischemic compression applied to the upper trapezius will be a useful way to increase the muscle activity of the serratus anterior.
