The present study was conducted to investigate the enterotoxin types of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bulk milk, Korean native cattle, pigs and poultry meat. Enterotoxins were produced by 88.0% of the organisms isolated from bulk milk, 76.2% from cattle, 64.7% from pigs and 22.5% from poultry meat. Enterotoxin type C and D were most common, being 42.0% and 12.8%, respectively. Enterotoxins were produced by all the strains of coagulase types Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ and Ⅴ, 94.4% of type Ⅵ and 77.4% of type Ⅶ, while only 36.8% of the mixed type ⅡㆍⅢ produced enterotoxins. Commonly, coagulase types Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅵ and Ⅶ strins produced enterotoxin C, and coagulase typis Ⅱ and ㆍⅢ strains produced enterotoxin D.

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of 312 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bulk milk, chickens, pjgs and cattle materials in Gyeongnam area during March to November 1991 were tested by the agar dilution method. MIC₉₀ of ampicillin(Ap), erythromycin(Em), gentamicin(Gm), Kanamycin(Km), penicillin G(Pc) and tetracycline(Tc) were higher than 100㎍/ml and all isolates were sensitive to cephalothin(Cet) and vancomycin(Vm) at 0.2 to 0.4㎍/ml and 0.4 to 1.56㎍/ml, respectively. All isolates from chickens, 54(98.2%) of 55 strains from pigs, 116(87.2%) of 133 strains from bulk milk and 8(25.8%) of 31 strains from cattle samples were resistant to at least one of the following ; Ap, Cm, Em, Km, Pc and Tc. Twenty-eight kinds of resistant patterns of the 271 resistant strains were detected. The most ferquent patterns of drug resistance were Cm Em Tc patterns(42 strains), Em Km Tc patterns(28 strains) and Em Tc patterns(26 strains).

OK serogroups of 408 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheal infants were determined by the use of the OK serogroups of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EEC). Of 408 strains of Escherichia coli tested, 8 strains (2.0%) were classified in to 3 OK groups. OK groups were isolated from 7 diarrheal infants (6.6%). These OK groups were 0128a, b:K67 (5 strains), 0126:K71(2 strains) and 044:K74(1 strain). All of 8 classical enteropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli were consistently negative in the suckling mouse. No strains were invasive when inoculated into the coitjunctival sac of guinea pigs.

In order to know the incidence of coagulase-positive in bulk milk from dairy farms, attempts were made to isolate the organism from 207 samples. Also examined was biochemical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. Isolation rates of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus in bulk milk samples were 24.6%, The population of Staphylococcus aureus varied from 10¹ to 10⁴/ml. All the isolated of the staphylococcus aureus showed production of coagulase, TNase and DNase, and fermentation of mannitol. However, of 133 isolates, 121(91.0%) showed hemolysis on sheep blood agar and 97.7% produced lecithinase in egg yolk medium. All of 133 isolates were sensitive to cephalothin, chloramphenicol and vancomycin but 33.1~46.6% of the strains were resistant to kanamycin, tetracycline and gentamicin.

The antimicrobial drug resistance of 402 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from infants with diarrhea were investigated by the use of agar plate dilution method and R plasmids in resistant strains was also tested. A total of 402 Escherichia coli strains were isolated from 106 diarrheal infants and tested for drug resistance and conjugative R plasmids. Among the 402 strains of E. coli isolated, 83. 3% were found to be resistant to one or more drugs against 8 drugs in generally used such as tetracycline(TC), neomycin (NM), chloramphenicol (CP), ampicillin (APC), gentamycin (GM), streptomycin (SM), kanamycin (KM) and nalidixic acid (NA).

A total of 277 specimens from cow skin, Korean native cattle skin, silage, bulk milk and cow feces were examined for the incidence of Listeria species. The bacterial isolates was selected on LiCl-phenylethanol-moxalactam agar plates after the cold enrichment in FDA-EB at 4℃ for 7 days and identified by several biochemical, mobility, and CAMP test. Prevalence of L. innocua was found to be 58.6% in cow feces, 17.1% in corn silage, 13.3% in Korean native cattle skin, 5.9% in cow skin, and 4.0% in bulk milk. L. monocytogenes was isolated from 4.3% in corn silage and 2.0% in cow skin but was not found in the skin and feces of cattle, and bulk milk specimens. Of 10 L. monocytogenes isolated, 7 strains were classified into serotype 4, and 3 strains was untypable.

In order to know the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in bulkand domestic animals, attempts were made to isolate the organisms from 593 samples. Also examined were the biochemical properties and the coagulase types of the isolates. Overall, S. aureus were present in 43.4% of poultry meat samples, 24.6% of bulk milk and 15.5% of pork, The incidence of S. aureus isolated from the body skin and the nasal cavity of cattle and pigs were 11.3%, 14.9% 21.9% and 44.4%, respectively. The majority of biochemical and cultural properties of the S. aureus isolates were identical to those of the standard strains. Particlarly, β-homolysis was common in the organisms isolated from bulk milk and pigs, while α-hemolysis was common from Korean native cattle and poultry meat. Most isolates(86.0%) produced one or more coagulase types. Only the mixed type ⅡㆍⅢ was detected in the organisms isolated from poultry meat and type Ⅱ and Ⅶ were most common in other samples.
