Instant hair thickeners contain various metals such as iron oxide and titanium dioxide, which generally cause a susceptibility artifact. Examples of the susceptibility artifacts caused by instant hair thickeners in this hospital were shared in order to emphasize the need to check and remove instant hair thickeners prior to brain magnetic resonance imaging examinations. In this case, the influence of susceptibility artifacts was small in images inspected at 1.5T compared with 3.0T depending on the strength of the main magnetic field. Depending on the sequence, it was possible to find susceptibility artifacts larger than the spin echo sequence in gradient echo sequences and echo-planar imaging (EPI). Furthermore, instant hair thickeners not only caused artifacts, but also affected the diagnostic value of images, which can lead to misdiagnosis of brain disease. Therefore, to reduce the generation of susceptibility artifacts, it is recommended that the use of instant hair thickener be checked before performing a brain magnetic resonance imaging examination and that as much of it should be removed as possible.
