As the scale of high-rise buildings grew larger and the uses in these buildings become more diversified comparing to the past, establishing an efficient vertical transportation plan became focused as a sufficient matter. In this research cases of vertical transportation planning in high-rise buildings were classified by uses and characteristics of the vertical and horizontal zoning plan were examined. Factors drawn from this analysis can be used as reference or as a guideline for planning high-rise buildings’ vertical transportation system.

Elevator planning for high-rise office buildings is one of the most significant planning elements considering that it directly affects users’ convenience and area efficiency. When establishing elevator plans for high-rise office buildings, decisions for vertical zoning should be made. Determining the amount of coverage area per elevator is relevant to deciding the number of floors per zone. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the range of area that one elevator can cover so that elevator plan can be established during the initial planning stage for high rise office buildings. This research is based on quantitative methods using proven calculation and the result can be used as a guideline for elevator planning.

The purpose of this study is to design guidelines for architects who are planning apartments in Iraq. These guidelines have been built based on the ‘Pattern Language’. 〈A Pattern Language〉, published by Christopher Alexander, contains 253 solutions or design patterns that recur in architecture. These patterns contain useful connective information which can be selected, modified, and combined to complete an actual design. Alexander’s ‘Pattern Language’ is a result of the search for a systematic design method. Patterns that can be applied to apartment unit planning have been selected in this research. In order to apply cultural elements to planning guidelines, traditional and modern housing cultures and spatial structure of housings in Iraq have been researched. Results from cultural studies were used to modify the selected pattern in order to build the ‘Pattern Language of Iraq Apartment Units’. Based on this pattern language, planning guidelines for Iraq apartment units have been designed. These guidelines are expected to be used as a reference for architects that are planning apartments in Iraq.

Core planning is one of the most significant elements in planning high-rise buildings. Elevator planning, in particular, can be considered as a major part in this area. When establishing elevator plans for high-rise buildings, vertical zoning is a critical fact or. Elevator planning is not only an important planning factor for efficient vertical transportation and cost reduction, but is also a field which needs efficient planning methods based on technical development. In this research, optimal vertical zoning methods are drawn from tested calculation methods. This quantitative method is different from other studies of high-rise buildings elevator pl anning methods that are based on case analysis. The purpose of this research is to ease the decision making process for architec ts by providing preliminary data for determining optimal elevator vertical zoning methods when planning high-rise buildings.

As demands for housing are rapidly increasing, many apartments are being built by foreign construction companies with high technical skills. However, in these cases, traditional characteristics can easily not be considered. The aim of this research is to study which elements of traditional residential culture and spaces are still continued in modern residential spaces and which element have disappeared due to modernization in Iraq. Plans of traditional courtyard houses and modern apartments in Iraq have been compared through review study, interviews, and analysis using Space Syntax. Results have shown how traditional cultures about protecting privacy and inviting guests have been continued in the modern culture and are also considered when planning apartments in Iraq. Also, spaces which are made to control temperature in hot and dry climates have disappeared and the kitchen is no longer a space for only women. Based on this study, further research is needed to develop a apartment prototype which consider cultures of Iraq. It is expected that Korean construction companies can use this as basic data when participating in apartment construction projects in Iraq.
