유아의 자아존중감 형성과 언어환경에 관한 고찰 : 청소년의 어린시절 언어환경을 중심으로

ABSTRACTThis study aims to provide preliminary data on the relationship between children's self-esteem and their psychological environment, more specifically, verbal environment. 60 university female students, aged 19 and 20, participated in the study by responding to open-ended questions recalling their childhood experiences. The analysis of data suggests, even though preliminary, that the type of verbal environment in which the child was real is stronly related to the level of self-esteem in later years, as summarized in the following. 1. Verbal environment during childhood has lasting impact on the self-esteem of university students. 2. Those with high level of self-esteem have parents who provide positive verbal environment. They give encouraging and warm words. The mothers are often found to be very religious, even though suggestive at this point. 3. Those with low level of self-esteem have parents who provide negative verbal environment. They often issue orders and forbidding commands like "Don't do that", accompanied by physical abuse and punishment. This group of subjects felt hurt most when their teachers insulted and sooted them in front of their peers. 4. Concrete examples of verbal expressions that made the sujects feel hurt most were collected and categorized into 19 and 18 items, in care of fathers and mothers, respectively. The 3 most often reported expressions by mothers are listed as follows(The number shows the percentage of students giving the corresponding answer). ① Overt derogatory expression of the child's incompetence (18%) "Why on earth are you so stupid?" ② Low esteem in comparison with siblings (11.377) "Why can't you be as good as your sister?" ③ Polluting the child for what he/she has become (9.2%) "In the name of God, 1 don't know where you got that from." The 3 most often reported expressions by fathers are ① Scolding without finding out about the circumstances do not understanding (12.6%) ② Expression of mistrust (9.6%) "Why don't you study?" ③ Lack of recognition of their worth or competence (9.5%) "You are not worthy of anything." "You don't know anything." In all, verbal environment is one of the important factors in fostering, self-esteem in children. Implications from the result of this study ask parents to provide positive verbal environment for children. In other words, giving "magic of encouragement" to children will held them lead a happy like in the future.
