Since 1968, A/Hong Kong/68(H3N2) new pandemic strain of influenza virus type A isolated at Hong Kong, many new antigenic variants of Hong Kong/68 have appeared in most areas of the world. In Korea there were influenza epidemics by it's variants from Febrauary to May in the years '69, '71, '72, '74, '75, '76, and '77 and identificated by means of hemagglutination-inhibition (H-I), neuraminidase-inhibition (N-I), and double immunodiffusion (DID) tests. Also influenza type A and B virus strains were isolated during the epidemic seasons in 1977. The epidemic and isolated virus strains in Korea from 1968 to 1977 were experimented by antigenic analysis. Summarized results were as follows.

During 50 days between February 19 to April 8 1985, Influenza A(H3N2) epidemic occurred mainly in the large cities(Seoul, Pusan, Kwangjoo) in the country. Epidemic peak was shown at 12th week of the year. Local city outbreak were shown typical sequential epidemic from Seoul capital city of the country. The epidemic associated viruses were determined as A/philippines/2/82(H3N2) and A/Mississippi/1/85(H3N2)-like strain. Influenza virus isolation rate chiefly from influenza-like illness of children patients were average 8.8%. For the study of bacterial superinfection during the influenza epidemic Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 29% of influenza virus confirmed patients, and whereas from 15.8% of influenza virus not confirmed patients. Two cases of Reye syndrome associated with A/philippines/2/82(H3N2) were demonstrated by serological antibody test from hospitalized children patients.

Investigation on the respiratory disease causing by pathogenic organisms was undertaken in order to detect the simultaneous causatives associated with influenza virus disease, in January to December 1982. 346 samples of the throat washings were obtained by throat washing technique from patients suffering from an influenza like symptoms in Children, in Seoul, Incheon, Chung Buk and Jeju Province. Out of 346 samples, 26 cases(7.5%) of A/Korea/82/(H3H2) virus, 38 cases (11.0%) of Mycoplasma organism, 19 cases(5.5%) of B. antiratum, and I case (0.3%) of K pneumonia were identified.

During 31 days (5 week) from December 9th 1985 to January 8th 1986, Influenza B epidemic were observed in Seoul city. Epidemic peak was shown at 52nd week in 1985. The Epidemic associated viruses were determined as B/yamanish/510/84 and B/Ann Arbor/1/86-like strain. From total of 124 specimens of influenza-like illness children virus isolation rate were average 4.0%, much lower than that of influenza A virus isolation experience. In the epidemic influenza B infection were predominantly involved in school age children.

An epidemic of influenza with a large number of localized outbreaks in schools and groups of young people has been reported from Seoul, Busan cities and other provinces of the Republic of Korea from January to March 1978. More than two strains of influenza virus, all similar to A/Texas/1/77 (H3 N2) were isolated in February 1978, and two strains of influenza virus, all similar to A/USSR/90/70 (H3 N2) were also isolated in the early March 1978. A serological survey on influenza viruses was carried out in Seoul, Busan cities and other rural areas during the post epidemic season by age groups and by means of hemaggln- tination- inhibition (HI) test. Hemagglutination- inhibition antibody possession rates of influenza virus were 22.4%. For A/Texas/1/77 (H3 N2) and 27.6% for A/USSR/90/77 (H3 N2) in the totality of the 105 healthy peoples under 40 years old of overall in Korea. In Seoul city, it was shown 36% of HI antibody positive rates among 50 peoples whereas none of H-I antibody possessed in the rural areas of Chung- Bug- Do province against above two strains of influenza virus.
