This study was conducted to evaluate the synergistic protective effects of mixtures of corn silk, perilla leaf and grape stem extract (CPG mixture) against UVB-induced skin damage and compound 48/80-induced pruritus in mice. The results showed that treatment with CPG mixture exhibited much stronger suppressive effect on erythema and melanin index as well as melanin formation than treatment with ascorbic acid (AA) in UVB-irradiated mice. Moreover, the treatment with CPG mixture showed ameliorative effect on immune cell infiltration and collagen fiber destruction in UV-irradiated mice. The treatment with CPG mixture inhibited glutathione (GSH) depletion, lipid peroxidation and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in UVB-irradiated mice. Furthermore, the treatment with CPG mixture inhibited compound 48/80-induced scratching behavior and histological changes in mice. Taken together, these results indicated that CPG mixture has potentials as functional and therapeutic materials against skin damage and itch-related skin diseases.

The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Diospyros lotus leaf extract (DLE) against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute liver injury in mice. Administration of DLE significantly attenuated the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and liver lipid peroxidation in APAP-treated mice. Histopathological examination showed that DLE treatment decreased the incidence of liver lesions in APAP-treated mice. DLE treatment markedly increased superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activity, and glutathione levels in APAP-treated mice. Furthermore, DLE treatment significantly suppressed the production of proinflammatory factors such as the nitric oxide, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS in APAP-treated mice. These results suggest that DLE protects the liver from APAP-induced hepatic injury via antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects.

Protective effects of extracts of the new cultivar MNU-32 developed from blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) cultivar V-9 against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells were investigated. DPPH radical scavenging activities of MNU-32 and V-9 extracts were 570.00 μg/mL (IC50) and 644.55 μg/mL (IC50), respectively. Inhibition effects of MNU-32 extracts against intracellular ROS generation, cell cytotoxicity, and lactate dehydrogenase release were higher than for the V-9 extract in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells. Compared with the V-9 extract, MNU-32 extract treatments produced higher levels of lipid peroxidation attenuation and greater protection against DNA damage, restored the activity of superoxide dismutase in H2O2- treated HepG2 cells, and increased protein expression levels of superoxide dismutase in HepG2 cells in a dose and time-dependent manner. MNU-32 blackberry extracts exerted protective effects against H2O2-induced cell damage due to higher anthocyanin contents than the V-9 blackberry extract.
Cyanidin-3-glucoside Ameliorates CCl4-induced Liver Injury in Mice

The protective effect of cyanidin-3-glucoside(C3G) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liverinjury in mice was investigated. Administration of C3Gattenuated the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase, and liver lipid peroxidation inCCl4-treated mice. Histopathological examination of mouselivers showed that C3G reduced the incidence of liverlesions induced by CCl4. Moreover, C3G prevented DNAdamage and decreased the protein levels of γ-H2AX inCCl4-treated mouse livers. C3G also increased the activityof the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase,glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, whichwere decreased due to CCl4 administration in CCl4-treatedmouse livers. C3G inhibited the expression levels of IL-6and iNOS in CCl4-treated mice. C3G apparently protectsthe liver from CCl4-induced hepatic damage throughantioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms underlying apoptosis induced by an ethanol extracts from Myagropsis myagroides (ME) in HeLa,U937, and PC-3 cells. ME treatment for 24 h significantly inhibited cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, and induced apoptosis. Moreover, ME treatment triggered the cleavage of caspase-8, -9, -3, and poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase (PARP). A general caspase inhibitor (z-VADfmk)inhibited ME-induced activation of caspase-3, PARP cleavage, and cell death. ME treatment also triggered the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol and stimulated the cleavage of Bid, up-regulation of Bax, and down-regulation of Bcl-2. Furthermore, ME treatment caused reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. An antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) blocked MEinduced activation of caspase-3, PARP cleavage, and cell death. Overall, these results suggest that ME-induced apoptosis is mediated by a caspase dependent pathway and ROS generation in HeLa, U937, and PC-3 cells.
고농도 오존발생기 성능평가 곡선을 활용한 대상물질 최적처리를 위한 운영비용 평가

This study had two aims: 1) based on a performance evaluation, to set the optimal operating range for a high-concentration ozone generator recently developed with domestic technology; 2) to establish a model-based control strategy to achieve the removal of target compounds. To determine the optimal operating range of the ozone generator, this study considered the energy consumption and oxygen cost per unit ozone generation, as these factors have the greatest influence on the operating cost. This method was in accordance with the methods proposed by the American Ozone Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency. The optimal operating range of the ozone generator was found to be approximately 2 to 14%. Within this range, the total operating cost is minimized, as determined by comparing the generated ozone concentration, oxygen cost, and power consumption. An operation of below 12% capacity may increase the cost of ozone production. Based on the performance evaluation curve, the ozone concentration required to reach the target substance removal rate of 80% can be calculated according to the change in water quality and flow rate of the ozone treatment facility at the wastewater treatment plant and by applying an ozone kinetic model. This method can be used to estimate the per unit production cost. For example, the average total ozone generated and unit production cost required to remove 80% of the group 4 compound iopromide were determined to be at least 17% greater than those required to remove the same amount of sulfamethazine, a group 1 compound. This study proposes a practical control strategy and evaluation method for calculating the operating cost of the ozone generator needed to achieve the target removal rate for categorized target substances. .
방사선 유도 돌연변이체 블랙베리로 제조한발효음료의 간 손상 회복 효과

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fermented blackberry drinks (BD)on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomlydivided into four groups with 6 rats per group: control, CCl4, CCl4 plus BD 3 ml kg-1, andCCl4 plus BD 6 ml kg-1. We found that the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) andalanine aminotransferase (ALT) were significantly increased and the activity of antioxidant enzymeglutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the liver was decreased in rats treated with CCl4 alone when comparedwith the control group. However, the administration of BD attenuated the levels of serumAST and ALT in CCl4-treated rats. Moreover, the administration of BD significantly increasedthe activity of GPx in CCl4-treated rat livers. Taken together, these results suggest that BD couldprotect the liver from CCl4-induced hepatic damage.

This study was conducted to analyze the protective capacity of cyanidin-3-glucoside(C3G), which is rich in mulberry and blackberry as an anthocyanin pigment. In this study, we foundthat treatment with C3G significantly reduced ROS production in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-treated HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, treatment with C3G significantlyincreased the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells. Moreover,treatment with C3G dose-dependently decreased the release of LDH and activation of caspase-3 inHepG2 cells treated with H2O2. Furthermore, the DNA damage in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells wasdecreased by C3G treatment when compared with the control group in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, treatment with C3G recovered the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxidedismutase and catalase in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells. To summarize, these results suggestthat C3G protects cells from H2O2-induced oxidative damage by activating antioxidant enzymes.
