Nutritional value of the leaf and antihyperlipidemic effect of the subterranean part of Smilax siebolidd Miq.(Liliaceae) were investigated in this experiment. 8 minerals, 17 amino acids and 5 fatty acids were quantitatively analyzed in the leaf. In comparison with other vegetables, the content of amino acids was about twice as much as those and a lot of essential amino acids were found. The content of fatty acids was similar with that of other vegetables. In addition, various trace elements such as Mg, Zn and Mn were contained. The chloroform extract of the subterranean part of this plant was effective to decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride level and decrease HDL-cholesterol level in plasma of mouse.

Four steroids have been isolated from the subterranean parts of Smilax nipponica Miquel (Liliaceae). The structures of these compounds were characterized on the basis of chemical and speectral data. They were $\beta$-sitosterol, $\beta$-sitosterol-3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside, neotigogenin-3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside and a new steroidal saponin designated as smilanippin A which was elucidated as neotigogenin-3-O-$\beta$-D-fucopyranosyl(1$\rightarrow$6)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranos ide.

Carboxylic acid is converted to acid chloride by thionyl chloride. Acid chloride reacts with 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2.4-D.N.P.H) to form the corresponding hydrazide. this hydrazide in aqueous basic solution leads to color-formation which can be utilized for colorimetric analysis. Since acid chloride is readily hydrolyzed to the parent carboxylic acid in the water, the coupling reaction of acid chloride with 2.4-D.N.P.H is carried out in actonitrile solution. the structures of N-acetyl-, N-benzoyl N'-(2.4-dinitro) phenyl hydrazine formed from the reaction of carboxylic acid and 2.4-D.N.P.H. are investigated by NMR and IR-spectrum.

On studying the paper chromatography of the extract from 10 kinds plants (Table 1.), it was found the paper chromatogram (Fig.1.) including 3 spots to 8 spots, and comparing with the reports of OSHIMA, NAKABAYSHI and NISHIDA, it was identified these substances as shown in Fig.1 at the area of spots and Rf values (Fig. 1 and Table 3). By this method it is summarized as follow: a. As shown in Fig. 1, both the pyrogallol type and the catechol type tannin were contained in plants. b. Sample No. VIII(Quercus aliena Blume var. pellucida Blume) contained the most tannic acid, as total % is 14.3%, and sample No. VII, IV, contained comparatively much tannic acid. c. The plants shown in sample No. V, VI, VII, VIII are abundant in Korea because of its latitude and climate condition.
Ferric Ammonium Sulfate에 依한 Tannic Acid의 定量에 關한 硏究

The study on tannic acid colirimetric determination was attempted with ferric ammonium sulfate. Concentration of tannic acid, then used, was 3.1×10-4M.∼1.2×10-3M., and that of ferric ammonium sulfate 2.0×10-4%. The two 325㎛ and580㎛ peaks apperaed on absorption curve, and the former was used, in this determination. The caribration curve was drawn at about pH value 3.7, and 325㎛. The analytical method mentioned above was applied to a number of cases, and was found comparatively good result.

Ⅰ. According to Noyes-Swift method, As? is qualitatively analyzed from cation groupⅡ, and arsenic trisulfide is precipitated by hydrogen sulfide gas at 1% hydrochloric acid acidity. The arsenic trisulfide precipitation easily peptizes through filtration; to prevent this peptization, 5% ammonium chloride usually applied. Ⅱ. The author has experimented with 8 differential hydrochloric acid concentrations and 6 differential ammonium chloride concentrations, and obtained the following results. a. By use of 5%(7.17) hydrochloric acid acidity obtained the favorable result in the reaction solution. b, 3% ammonium chloride of washing solution brought better result than 5% ammonium chloride. c. In ordinary analysis 1%~5% hydrochloric acid acidity and 3%~5% ammonium chloride washing solution can be applied.
