This article analyzes the different types of monk and Taoist characters in "Water Margin" from a macro perspective. These characters possess extraordinary skills and can do things that ordinary people cannot. The author uses their mysterious and extraordinary abilities to create more dangerous and bizarre plots and situations, while presenting their departure from tradition and adherence to tradition, enriching the novel's storylines. In addition, the appearance of monk and Taoist characters in "Water Margin" makes the characters more diverse and expands the scope of the work. Unlike Yuan Zaju, where rebellious monk and Taoist characters often have negative portrayals, the monk and Taoist characters in "Water Margin" can maintain loyalty, filial piety, and positive values while breaking the rules, and they practice these values through practical actions. This gives the characters more humanity and lifelike characteristics, making them more realistic and dimensional. This combination of positive and negative images breaks the traditional dichotomy of good and evil, making the plot of "Water Margin" more rich and appealing to readers.
