The authors have introduced a theoretical calculating formula of cutting forces in ortho-tropic material of wood by applying the theories of beam on elastic foundation and linear fracture mechanics. In this report, as their formula appears to be applicable to the crack type cutting in which chip is formed by crack extension from tool edge, they employ phenolic laminated sheet, unsaturated polyester resin, cast iron and coal as brittle materials for cutting exp-eriment,and confirm their formula to be of practial use in the brittle material cutting by comparing the experimental results with the theoretical values.

In case of excessive cutting, the frictional force between chip and tool rake surface restrained the flow of chip. The workpiece showed quite a large amount of compressive deformation after cutting and the flow chip was severely work-hardened. The depth of excessive cutting was directly proportional to the vertical component of the resistant forces on the tool and was inversely proportional to the hardness of workpieces. The injection of lubricants at tool rake surface or back surface of chip during cutting made the thickness of chip to be remarkably thin, the cutting forces to be decreased, the roughness of cutting surface to be very fine and the depth of excessive cutting to be gradually decreased or disappeared.

Fused deposition modelling(FDM) is a rapid prototyping(RP) process that fabricates part layer by layer by deposition of molten thermoplastic material extruded from a nozzle. RP system has many benefits. One of the benefits would be the ability to experiment with physical objects of any complexity in a relatively short period of time. Grinding is one of thee major precise cutting processes which make rough surface into fine one, but it is difficult to estimate the effects because the grinding process which is affected by many factors is very complex. In order to raise the grinding effects without making worse the grinding quality by using grinding machine, grinding characteristics according to variable grinding conditions are observed. The purpose of this research is to suggest the theoretical guide for high effects and the critical value in grinding process, and clarify the sufficient grinding heat and dimensional errors by the experiment and the theory. The estimated results of thermal deformation are compared with measured profiles of ground surface. Main results to be obtained are as follows ; 1) In terms of grinding method, the down cut grinding method produces good grinding surface roughness in case of small grinding depth, otherwise, the up cut method in case of large grinding depth. 2) A grinding temperature and dimensional error by grinding machine with developed nozzle is decreased and these results obtain a good workpiece quality.
