The purposes of this study are 1)to give an overview of previous research on Japanese compound verbs and 2)to suggest further issues as a Korean researcher. Based on the result, this study points out that 1)much attention has been paid to aspectual verbs such as -hajimeru, -dasu or high-frequency verbs, e.g. -komu, 2)the classification of corresponding forms of Japanese and Korean compound verbs is mainly attempted in the field of contrastive study of Japanese and Korean, 3)morphological analysis and phonological analysis have far less fully studied than syntactic-semantic analysis, 4)diachronic study has been little investigated, 5)few studies have been done concerning Japanese language education. In addition, this study suggests further issues, i.e. 1)making lists of major compound verbs of Japanese, 2)providing fine-grained description of corresponding forms between two languages, 3)selection of similar compound verbs and its semantic analysis, and 4)presenting practical study concerning Japanese education of compound verbs.

To achieve native-like fluency in Japanese and Korean is one of the important goals for both Korean learners of Japanese and Japanese learners of Korean. The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to examine the morphological features and uses of ‘~sugiru’ and ‘~sugi’ in Japanese, and (2) to clarify the similarities and differences between the two languages through comparisons with the Korean equivalents to each form of Japanese. The key findings are as follows.(i) Japanese sentences can end up with verb stem, while Korean can not. (e.g. 時代劇の見すぎ!(zidaigekino misugi!)→*시대극 너무 보!(sidaegeug neo-mu bo!)→시대극 너무 봤네!(sidaegeug neo-mu bwassne!))(ⅱ) There is a colloquial expression Koreans frequently use such as "(~도) ~도 너무~((~do) ~do neomu ~)" which means no matter how much. However its literal translation to Japanese fails to make a sense. (e.g. 해도 해도 너무 하네(haedo haedo meomu hane)→*してもしてもしすぎるよ(sitemo sitemo sisugiruyo)→あまりといえばあんまりだ(amaritoieba anmarida))(ⅲ) Accurate understanding of high-frequency expressions is important for language learners to achieve native-like fluency in target language.(ⅳ) For further study it is necessary to make lists of untranslatable idiomatic expressions in Japanese and Korean and to clarify the corresponding relationships between them.
