The aim of this paper is to clarify some influences which the difference in linguistic environments has on South Korean students’ back-channel uses. The actual condition of back-channel uses in the conversations of the Korean learners of Japanese living in Japan and in South Korea was investigated, and both differences were analyzed. As a result, about the form of the back-channels used in language behavior and nonverbal behavior, the difference was not seen between the Korean learners of Japanese living in Japan and in South Korea. However, the difference was seen in the number of times of their usage, and how to use their functions. Concerning the number of times of using the back-channels in language behavior, the result of the learners living in South Korea was closer to that of Japanese native speakers than that of the learners living in Japan. The same result was gained regarding how often speakers or hearers use nodding. As opposed to it, about how to use the functions of language behavior and nonverbal behavior, the result of the learners living in Japan was closer to that of Japanese native speakers than the learners living in South Korea. From these things, linguistic environments do not influence the forms of back-channels uses. And about major back-channels, research in overseas has better influence than research in Japan, because research overseas takes them up more often and teaches them more actively than in Japan. However, linguistic environments influence how to use their functions. Since this could not be taught by language, it turned out that learning in target language environments is important.
