Pied-Piping by Non-Phrase-Initial Wh-Words in English Reconsidered From the Processing Perspective

Vol.18 No.3

It has been observed that pied-piping in English is freer in appositive relative clauses than in restrictive relative clauses and in matrix questions than in embedded questions (Emonds 1979, Cowper 1987, etc.). This kind of clause-type sensitivity of pied-piping has caused great difficulties for the analysis of pied-piping, and some recent accounts such as Yoon (2002, 2003) and Heck (2004) propose to explain it, along with various other properties of pied-piping, by assuming that such pied-piping involves a secondary movement and that this secondary movement is of a special type which has properties different from the typical wh-movement. In this paper I reexamine the pied-piping data from the perspective of non-structural factors such as semantics, pragmatics and ultimately, processing, and show (i) that the so-called unique properties of pied-piping including clause-type sensitivity are not specific to pied-piping and (ii) that they can be better explained in terms of processing. Based on the way various non-structural factors affecting the locality of wh-movement have been explained from the perspective of processing, I will show how those unique properties of pied-piping can be explained in a similar way without complicating the syntax of pied-piping.

Aspect and Agentivity in Korean Multiple Subject Constructions

Vol.19 No.2

In this paper, I examine the lexical choice of predicates appearing in Korean MSCs (Multiple Subject Constructions) in terms of aspect and agentivity. It has been generally assumed that only the stative predicates can appear in MSCs. Starting from the initial hypothesis that the acceptability of a MSC is subject to the aspect of its predicate, I show that it is not the aspect but the agentivity of the predicate that determines the acceptability of a MSC. To be more specific, I show that the more agentive the subject of the predicate in a MSC is, the more unacceptable the MSC is, and based on it, I propose the non-agentivity condition for MSCs. I also discuss why this kind of non-agentivity condition should hold for MSCs. My claim is that it can be derived from the deeper principles of grammar governing argument realization if we assume the split subjecthood hypothesis (Dixon 1994, etc.). Lastly, I examine the relationship between the non-agentivity condition and other semantic or pragmatic conditions proposed for MSCs such as the characterization condition (Jang 1998) and the newsworthiness condition (J. Yoon 2004).

Vol.3 No.1

The local cities have been declined according to a decrease in population and weaken urban function. The government has begun the serious study on the urban regeneration at this point of time. Especially, it recognizes the necessity of the program application toward the local cities, and the research is progressing. This study is for deciding the urban deprivation area in ChungCheong Areas by the urban deprivation index. It decides the urban deprivation for 2000 and 2005 by the two-step cluster analysis method. This study is the basic analysis for the urban regeneration establishment and it would support the regeneration plan establishment in the future.

Vol.37 No.4

The purpose of this study is to decide an appropriate neighborhood and a transition rule of cellular automata by analyzing the past growth process of urban areas in Busan. The fuzzy set conception is applied to minimize the loss of data, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) is used to estimate the relative weight of each factor. With cellular automata which can manage the change based on the dynamic model and time, this study analyzes the urban growth of Busan from 1987 to 1997. Also, through the simulation of different types for neighborhood and transition rules, we can find the appropriate neighborhood and the transition rule for Busan. It is the sensitivity analysis, Cramer's V and Kappa calculation to verify the accuracy of the simulation. In conclusion, the forecast of physical urban growth pattern is more accurate under conditions when the number of matrixes for the neighborhood is small, the shape of the neighborhood is circular, "

Selective Island Effects in Korean Wh- Constructions: A Diachronic Approach

Vol.31 No.2

Yoon, Jeong-Me. 2006. Selective Island Effects in Korean Wh-Constructions: A Diachronic Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-2, 303-342. This paper deals with the selective island effects of wh's-in-situ in Korean. I propose that wh-words like nwukwu in Korean, when not used as bare existential pronouns, should be analyzed as the complex forms of indefinite wh and null Q with an unspecified Q-value, whose specific Q-value is determined by Spec-head agreement after they move to Spec of C/delimiter with a Q-feature. Wh's-in-situ in languages like Korean, thus, contrast from those in Chinese-type languages, which are simple indefinite pronouns bound by Q generated separately. The main goal of this paper is to provide support to this proposal based not only on the synchronic but also on the diachronic data. I show how the diachronic perspective enables us to explain the fact that wh's-in-situ in Korean appear to show the properties of both movement and unselective binding. Double Relativization in Korean - An Explanation Based on the Processing Approach to Island Effects

Vol.36 No.1

Yoon, Jeong-Me. 2011. Double Relativization in Korean - An Explanation Based on the Processing Approach to Island Effects. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-1, 157-193. Certain instances of double relativization are possible in Korean, and one syntactic explanation for it is that they are derived from multiple subject constructions without violating the CNPC and that they thus do not pose a problem for the null operator movement analysis of relativization (Han and Kim 2004). Despite its merit of capturing the strong correlation in the acceptability of DRCs and their MSC counterparts, this account has many counterexamples and its explanatory power is limited in that it can explain only the DRCs in Korean. In this paper, I propose an account which does not suffer from the kind of problems a purely syntactic account like Han and Kim has but can still capture the strong correlation between DRCs and MSCs. In short, my claim is that such an account can be found if we take a processing approach to island effects. (Myongji University)

Undoing and Wh-Island Effects of Scrambling in Korean

Vol.23 No.1

In this paper, I study whether the claim that certain instances of scrambling count as syntactic wh-movement (Takahashi 1993) can be maintained through an acceptability judgment study of Korean native speakers. To be specific, I test (i) whether such scrambling lacks the so-called undoing effects and (ii) whether it shows wh-island effects. As for the first question, the results clearly show that such scrambling can be undone, just like other instances of scrambling and thus that the claim cannot be maintained. As for wh-island effects, I interpret the results as indicating that scrambling in general shows wh-island effects. Taken together, the results show that there is no reason to distinguish scrambling of wh-phrases to an interrogative clause from other instances of scrambling. However, they suggest that scrambling should be distinguished from the typical A'-movement in that its motivation is semantic effects and that it can be undone if not properly motivated.

Wh-island Effects of Wh-in-situ in Two Types of Wh-in-situ Languages - A Processing Account

Vol.23 No.4

Wh-in-situ in Korean are known to show wh-island effects while those in Chinese do not. In this paper, I show that a simple explanation for this difference can be found if we recognize that wh-in-situ questions with a non-local wh-Q association are garden path sentences and that what we call the wh-island effects of wh-in-situ in Korean is not the unacceptability of wh-in-situ questions with a non-local wh-Q association but the high likelihood of misinterpreting such sentences as having the local scope. If so, the question why wh-in-situ in Chinese do not show wh-island effects can be recast as why wh-in-situ questions with a non-local wh-Q association in Chinese are not or less prone to such a misinterpretation, and an answer for this question can be found in some trivial differences in the use of Q-particles between the two languages. As further support, I show that some of the intra-linguistic variations in wh-island in Korean can be explained in the same ways the absence of wh-island effects in Chinese is explained. I also explore the possibility that this account can be extended to other wh-in-situ languages.
